1971 Skylark Driver Door not closing completely

Discussion in 'The ragtop shop' started by captainamerica, Apr 17, 2014.

  1. Hello,

I replaced the driver side door hinge pins and from what I understand it is supposed to take about an hour and it ended-up taking me 2 days. I think I aligned it properly enough but I'm having an issue where the door doesn't exactly sit smoothly where the latch pin catches it. It has about a good inch or so of a gap where the door is supposed to seal. It works; it catches the latch pin but it still has about an inch or so when closed where it does sit smooth. Any ideas? I removed the latch pin from the frame and the door still didn't want to go all the way to where it should be...i was able to get it where it should be but it had resistance. I tried to attach a picture but it didn't upload.

It is your door weatherstrips. Take it off ,and try the door. If you can get the door to shut nice and line up properly without it, then you know that is the problem. What brand weatherstrip do you have ? Most are too thick. Especially the ones from the Parts Place they advertise as "latex" and closest to N.O.S. . If you lay them next to original GM weatherstrips, you will see how much thicker they are.

The top of the door looks out more than the bottom.
Question: Did you replace the hinge pin bushings too ?

I see a stop bumper just inside the door, this is the one you had prior to replacing the pins.

Best bet, like stated earlier. take all the rubber off & get the door aligned. Possibly may need an adjustment at the hinges. Closing before with worn/bent hinges has changed the positioning. New straight pins will make the door hang a little differently.

Did you remove the hinge from the door or the body?

  6. Thanks to everyone for the responses. I did replace the hinge pins and bushing following the detailed instructions somewhere on this site, I wish I would have started with those instructions because it would have save me alot of headaches and time; its not simply popping the old ones out and putting the new ones in. I am in Chicago, so thanks for the offer of help, but New Jersey would be a long ride.

Most of you will not like this but I decided to use a 2x4 and placed it near the bottom of the door and the car and pushed on the upper part of the door. It is not perfect but it is close to 80% better. I still have to fine tune it a bit with some adjustments at the hinge.

right now, I'm in way over my head trying to replace the convertible top. I'm on day 4 of the install.

    Thanks again...
