    Greetings,

Having brake issues on my Skylark, pedal is firm for a bit when I start driving then eventually goes down to the floor. The fluid was low and I did top it off, looks like the level is constant and I cannot see any evidence of a leak. Also, the brake light on the dash comes on intermittently. Thinking it might be the master cylinder, any thoughts for the experts?

    thanks

Sounds like a master to me. If you pump it up and hold the pedal down, does the pedal sink?

My best advice is to put the car on jackstands and pull all the wheels off. Do a thorough brake inspection. Pull the dust boots off the wheel cylinders and check for evidence of brake fluid leaking. Push the wheel cylinders in to make sure they move freely. If you have no visible signs of a leak, the leak is internal to the master.

Yes, do thorough inspection as they said. I will add that my 70 GS was on jack stands with the wheels off for almost two weeks when I finally bleed the system and tried to seat each fitting multiple times. Installed all new parts from master cylinder, all lines, etc.

The toughest leak to find was the junction block above the rear axle. It was leaking but since its above the axle and exhaust it was tough to see.

I also wrapped each fitting with a shop towel so that I could see what was leaking and avoid brake fluid on fresh paint. Paper towel worked great on the front distribution block on the frame, allowed me to see which fitting was leaking.

Just did a monster brake job on a 59 Ford. Literally everything was bad. Master leaking out the back, all 4 wheel cylinders either leaking or frozen, brake shoes destroyed, rear flex hose clogged solid. And I even had to make a new steel line as a bonus.

Add to it that the master and rear brake shoes were wrong. So I had to go to the parts store

    64203,

When in park it does not go all the way down to the floor, only after driving it for a bit.

Thanks for all the great input, i'll have to start troubleshooting this week. Just ordered a new master.
