I think the measurements were in the Steve Dove GS Book. I will take a look today.

When the guys laid out the stripes for my 71 GSX they took the measurements from the Stephen Dove book. Which were taken off an original stripe car.

At the time I was told all the stencil kits were “junk”, and from what I have heard on this board, we’ll let’s just say that I would not use them.

One of the tricks to laying out the stripes is making sure the angle is correct where it comes off the rear quarter and goes onto the rear spoiler.

Some of the guys make that angle too square and it doesn’t look right. If you mount the rear spoiler on the car and continue the spoiler angle onto the quarter then it comes out looking correct.

Now if you make them stagger the stripes (like I did) on the top of the spoiler and at the top of the rear wheel arch (like the original cars) had, then it will take a little longer to lay out.

What I outlined above is the most accurate way I know to do the stripes correctly. If you want to use some type of stencil kit to quote “save some time” etc. then have at it, but Adam bought one of those kits when he striped Sabotka’s 72 red GSX and he stated he threw away most of the kit.

Again you can do what you want, but that’s the best answer I can give you.

    stump puller455,

How soon do you need the measurements? My GSX has original paint so the stripes are 100% original and are an example of how they looked in early April 1970 after they had already done over 250 of these cars. If you are planning to be in middle TN anytime soon you could come measure and photograph it until your heart is content.

It seems that most painters do a pretty good job putting the stripes on these cars except for the front fenders. People get the urge to make the strips exactly follow the arch of the top edge of the fender and the original stripes are not that way (photos below for comparison). So what they end up with is a stripe that looks like it's pointing down at the ground. Here are a couple of examples of well-restored cars that have stripes that are too curved in the area ahead of the front wheels and the result is a stripe that points down and looks droopy. The originals don't look this way.

Check out the arch of the stripe shown in these three photos of my original paint car. Notice how they do not turn down as much. If you start looking around it seems that more cars have it wrong than those that have it correct. Everyone concentrates on the rear spoiler and the rear quarter panels and also worry about replicating the mistakes above the rear wheels which can't be seen unless you are very close to the car. Then they make a big mistake on the front fender arch that can be spotted from 50' away.

Here is another original paint car owned by Rusty D. here on V8buick. Notice how straight the front fender stripe is and how is doesn't exactly follow the fender arch. Very few people reproduce this correctly.
