The Missus and I drove from NC to Pennsylvania to see a 65 GS. Seller represented it as "rust free". Paint?"Beautiful "according to seller "everyone at shows remark about how shiny it is" . Sounds good so far. "OK,"I asked ,"on a 1 to 5 scale with 1 being concours perfect, detailed tire groove car,and 5 being good for parts and not much else, how would you rate this car?" To which the seller responded"Oh,probably a 2!" Drove up straight through.. Got to sellers house. Chit chat, howareya, etc. No car in driveway. In basement garage behind house. Walked around back ,seller opened garage door and sure enough there it was....65 GS. Dark in basement. "Mind cutting on some lights?"I asked. Lights come on...not enough to see well.My wife asks the seller and his wife," Would you mind backing it out in the sunshine so we can see it better?" Uh,well,ok",the seller slowly, reluctantly said. Sunlight! Voila! Cracked, crazed worn paint. Crawl under the car. Rust crumbles to the slightest touch on the undercarriage, sheeting down around my head. I crawl out . I inquire of seller "I thought you said it was rust free?". To which he replies "It is". "Well, what's that I ask?"pointing at the untidy iron oxide on the driveway,my hands and sprinkled on my face. "Well, maybe a little"he retorts. So we stand there . Looking at each other. Awkward silence. I look at the missus . She looks at me. "Let's go,honey" Seller's face screws into an incredulous, indignant mask as he remarks"You don't want it?!". After telling him and his wife we weren't interested,we walked back straight to our vehicle, left and and drove straight through back to NC. Nineteen hours on the road. "Trust but verify"(RR)

With all due respect, that's exactly how it looked in the pictures right down to the spilled latex looking paint on the left inner fender. But, I still loved it! To quote you earlier, "I've been on the hunt, and just about any 4 speed BBC is worth its weight in gold." Maybe the rough trip down made you reconsider subconsciously, you know, the old "this is crazy" voice of reason that has no place in the hobby. Here's to hoping you slept on it and reconsidered. Good luck in your travels either way Bill!

How about a few RWB pictures for the road?

Hey Lucas. We made it to Joplin. Tomorrow morning we pick up chewy, Bullit, and little boner and 13-14 hours later we get home. Hopefully.

Brian, buying a car is great but it is was all bondo. and painted over trim. And the back seat didn't exist. A matching # Chevelle 4 speed is what Bill wants and we will see he gets the right one. He wants a project but also wants to enjoy it. It was advertised correctly but we couldn't verify the trans was correct. It didn't look like a Saginaw. Too many maybe's for us.
I left the final decision to Bill and was glad he turned it down but would of supported him if he brought it home. I help him search for cars and parts. That's my job. I put this whole trip together in less then 12 hours. Right down to hotels and car hauler. And the Insurance on it if we needed it. Bill got the financing. We are a team.

I am still hoping to end up with a car on the way home. A lot of opportunities with in the next 800 miles. I know as I travel this route ALL the time with my daughter and grandkids here....ppat

I Wish I was "Joe Got Rocks". I'd Love to have that SC/Rambler.
I always thought they were Sharp (but loud) & if I remember correctly, were supposed to run 14.4s box stock.
Not good figures by Today's standards, but Strong back in that time.

When I was in high school there was one running around town. Looked like it was a mint original. Got to hand it to AMC. These cars along with the AMXs were really out there. Red , white and blue , who can argue with that ?

Today we are feeling like two fried eggs; sunny side up and a little brown around the edges; kinda crispy. First time EVER, we made a 2000 mile trip and I only took two pics. The Chevelle merited ONE and the other one, well, I knew we were getting close to home LOL...Thaz what Im' talk about...

I would have classified this as a field find, not a barn find. "Maybe" under a Texas carport for a half a century. The dash wasnt cracked but had melted somewhat and sagged in several spots. The chevelle had a Frenched antenna and on the inside of the trunk was glass cloth just hanging down, saturated with resin, but never adhered to the inner trunk skin. Honestly, it wasnt worth taking any more digital pics. The film was too expensive for this one LOL. The interior was done for, front fenders, doors, rear 1/4's trunk lid and hood all had major issues with waviness and bondo.
Even the passenger side fender showed definitive signs off having had a hole cut in the fender to get at the AC blower motor, then welded and bondo'd back in place. I swear the only sanding equipment the guy had was a giant old Craftsman half sheet electric orbital sander. Core support, altho different than what we know on Buicks didnt look too bad, but there was a bunch of ROMEX solid core wire attached as battery accessories along with an alarm with siren and crappy wiring for that through out. Kill switches all over (not even acquiring amateur level).

Just about all the side marker lights were painted up to, and then wiped "kinda clean" with a rag. All the spring clips on the back side were sprung and loose. It goes on and on. Poor old car.

To Golden oldie... Sorry we couldnt stop by Bill! We had 3 stressed out dogs that had emptied their sanitation systems for 3 days and a quick stop for gas and we were back on the 'crete. We made almost 800 miles in 12 hours. We will most definitely meet up one day. Do you make the Belvidere swap meet? I'll buy the hot dogs haha.

I owe Luke an ice cream sammich LOL... ws

So do we call this he "Trilogy of Terror"? One 1965 GS too much $$$ laying in the woods in Michigan by Jerry (Smokey), then the Capt America Rat reject, and now this morning this one thats 40 miles from home. WTF??
Spoke with this guy just now and we'll swing over for breakfast and a look tomorrow.

Pat just left in the 409 for a 400 mile trip to watch her grand daughter graduate from college in Elgin Il. Is that dame gutsy or what???

So this guy has a F/G hood and front fenders, only 2 passenger side windows and a new floor in the cab and one to go in to the trunk. Not motor or trans but was a slush box car. 10 bolt probably open rear end. Tires and wheels included and its inside a nice pole barn. The guy bought it 2 years ago and had a failed back surgery at 57 years of age. $3100 OBO with a title in his name and easy to find parts, but the real cost?

    NO A/C... ws

    Hi Bill,
If you mean the Scrap Drive in Belvidere in June, yes, I always go to that one. The Little Hershey swap meet is dying but I usually get over there and run through quickly. Jefferson Spring and Fall and Elkhorn I never miss. We take parts to Jefferson. My wife and I get up to Door County the 2nd weekend of September and typically we stop at the McDonald's in Two Rivers right by the bridge and I think there's a marina right there. I thought about you the last couple years but never thought about it ahead of time to know how to get ahold of you. One of these days. Sorry the Chevelle didn't work out but glad you had a safe trip. I know what those trips are like, my wife and I made a two day trip with the truck and trailer to Chattanooga last February to buy a `71 El Camino. It's in better shape than that `69 Chevelle and it's a matching numbers big block (402) with a 4 speed. Here's a couple pics of it, one with the original wheels and one with the Ansens I had on it for part of the summer. I love that car. Put 3,400 miles on it this summer while my poor lonely Buick only got 212 miles put on it.

Hey Bill... Im so sorry we couldnt hook up but we were burnt beyond recognition by that point, which Im sure as a road warrior you can appreciate! I havent done Belvidere for a few years, since I got out of the Model T Ford end of the hobby, but Jefferson is a killer and if something pops between now and then, I will be there for sure. A pal and I always do West Bend, Wi. swap. Its pretty good, 2 hours from home and we can see the whole she-bang in about 3-4 hours.

For one reason or another, Pats always had a disdain for those El Chamingos'. Myself on the other-hand, have always been partial to them and that '71 is a beauty! Id jump on something like that and teach Pat to like them LOL... Shes learned a new appreciation for this stuff, and driving with her across country, she's always scouring the landscape for -"RUST !!!! I saw *** back there. Do I need to turn around?"

She'd never been on a yacht before I met her either and is now an official Commodore. The boat yard in TR is SeaGull marina. If you were to pull through the drive through at Crack Arnold's and look to the right, youd see my Roamer 100 feet away under the white shrink wrap. If you go over the bridge right there I am behind the VERY FIRST building on the left at the summer quarters. YOU MUST give me a call when you swing through! We'll at least do lunch or grab a Coke or what ever!!! 630-388-8882

Its too bad this trip popped up in such a hurry. No sightseeing, but as the old adage goes "He who hesitates is lost" couldve been this one. Im glad it wasnt, and a $800 trip beats the heck out of $8000 to see a POS. Gads! Im still having bad dreams over that thing. Its like a new comic book--- "Captain America Goes Bad".

If this '65 plays out tomorrow, Jefferson will be the one for sure! I know it needs a bunch, but a lot of the crappy work is done and all thats left is the "fun stuff" LOL. Heck, how bad can a stock 454 and 4 speed be to allocate? Hang a clutch and brake pedal bracket? BTDT. Just about all the rest is re-popped. Time is the big factor haha. I see a slick monochrome paint scheme. This one aint for a purist as its already half way there to a race car-pro street touring. I guess I have to set my sights a little lower. That 12 point buck is only 100 feet away.

Thanks for the input. And once again, I am going to apologize for missing you and all the other Buick Brethren for going OT with Chevy stuff. Where else in the virtual world can you do a thred (remember I didnt even start this one!!) about other vehicles on a specific owners forum? I love all yooz guys; yer da best! ws

This is the view OF McD's and also at the summer dock past the bridge.
