Has anybody rebuilt their stock column? Mine is shot with excessive play, the bearing is gone!

if so, any info would be appreciated on technique and where to source parts.

Also, what other columns will be a direct bolt in? Even if not correct what else would work?

I think ‘68 is all by itself-earlier units weren’t collaspsable, later had the switch on them. A body should interchange between brands. As for rebuild, you may need to seek out a pro or someone on here who’s done them by using ‘search’ and PM them.
Or post a ‘parts wanted’; several people on here are likely to have a good used unit (and reasonable unless you want a tilt column).

Loose at the top or bottom? As I recall, the screws that hold in the T/S switch also hold together the bearing carrier assembly. When you remove those screws the threaded plate behind it all drops down and is a royal pain to fight the spring, line it back up and reattach. That could be the problem. I thought I had replaced the bearings in a 68 tilt I did, but I can't find any receipts, so I may have just cleaned and lubed them.
There is a salvage yard near me that had at least one 68 Skylark buried in the woods/brush 2 or 3 years ago. I bet it's still there, but with scrap so high, ya never know.
