Hello, I have had the headlight bezels for my 67 GS re-chromed and now I need to paint the black and silver areas. I am wondering how anybody went about masking and prepping these things for paint and possibly what silver is used on these things.

    Thanks

It's a two step masking job, each color has to be masked off from the other.

I used argent silver/ satin black and sprayed a light coat of etch primer first to aid adherence. I always use automotive grade masking tape.

Any particular brand of argent silver? For me the re-chroming process left some pitting in the black painted areas which I will have to work on with some primer and sanding before painting. The primer I have SEM high build , I was going to try some Bulldog adhesion promoter prior to the primer. Did you guys trim the masking tape with a razor blade or were you able to find any that matched up with width of the two areas?

I used Eastwood argent I borrowed from a friend, don't need much...that's for sure. Masking is a pretty tedious process that requires good masking tape and a very sharp razor.

The black areas surrounding the headlights in the photos above were loaded with pits, it took lots of sanding and filling with glazing putty to smooth things out before painting. I did use high build primer before the black went on.

    It will be tedious...

I like to use new blades for this kind of masking job. I also had to fill lots of pits.
I personally don't find this kind of thing tedious. I enjoy it!

I agree Ed, I enjoy doing this kind of thing myself, so maybe tedious was a poor choice of words.

Is the SEM Trim Black flat or satin? Its hard to tell from the picture.

It's more of satin finish and looks really good on these bezels.IMHO
It pretty much mimics the original look.

I used SEM Trim Black also. There's a little bit of shine which I like.

I also used the trim black and found it to be close to a semi-gloss. Too shiny for me. I finished it off with one coat of Rustolem flat black.
