yes, short console for manual transmission. that is the lowest optioned '67 GS400 I've ever seen. Only 1 option listed. I would not be surprised if it was a 3-speed manual instead of a 4-speed.
Thanks! It is in a salvage yard. I was pleased to see it had a fully boxed frame, as i have heard many people say that is a myth.
You are correct, all '67 GS400 hardtops, sedans, and convertibles had a boxed frame. What condition was the car? Any other photos you could post or send to me? Do you have the VIN? I've been collect trim tag info and other data for '67s for many years and never seen one from Flint with so few option codes (that car has only 1). I've never seen that little star after the paint-top code either. That is a common paint color and it has the most common top (black) so I'm curious about the meaning of the star. Here is a cheat sheet I put together a while back to decode the rest of a '67 GS body tag. I just updated it this weekend as a matter of fact. For the car you have pictured, there is no transmission called out but the console proves that it's a manual transmission and not an automatic. By not calling out a transmission that should mean it was a 3-speed manual which was standard. If it was a 3-speed manual without a console it should have a 2B so that Fisher Body would know to put the large hole in the floor.
I thought i took more pics of the car....but this is all i have (not very helpful, i know). I will probably be back out there in the next few weeks. The star next to the paint seemed interesting to me as well. I cant recall ever seeing that.
Jason, Thanks for those photos. It looks to still be wearing the original pin stripes. Poor thing didn't survive. If you do go back, and if you can get the driver's door open, snap a pic of the VIN. I will add it to the list of dead '67s. Thanks
Gary, Could it have been a column shifted bucket seat car that has a shorty console? My car was originally like that, only without the console. I've seen other GS 400's set up like that.
This car had the short console for a manual transmission shifter, code F. The short console between the bucket seats would have been 2O on the trim tag. Sure would have been nice if GM had used these codes on cars built at Fremont and Baltimore too. Each plant seemed to do things just a little bit different than the others. One of my ‘67s has bucket seats with a column-shift automatic and no console. Just seems like something is missing.
Like one of your 67's my red auto convertible came from factory with buckets, driver seat is powered, but no console so I gathered the parts and installed the console and a tilt console steering column. Now I feel like the car is complete since it was heavily optioned with A/C , AM/FM, power windows, powered bucket, and power top. View attachment 485729
A little late to the thread but would that body tag give any info as to the rear end gears? So low optioned maby it was ordered for some drag strip racing.
I do not believe so. That is a Fisher Body tag and was used to option out the shell. I don't think Fisher Body cared what rear the car had. Duane
Anyone know about GS400 built in California. Any of them built with 12 bolt rear axles? Did they all get smog stuff or only if sold in cali? Thanks Gary
No 12-bolts, all had 8.2” 10-bolt. No, all cars built at Fremont did not get AIR (smog pumps). The option on the order sheet says “E2 Air Injection Reactor (California Cars Only)” and that means cars sold in the state of California. A car built at Fremont but shipped to Washington state would not have the smog pump.
No. The only information provided on the trim tag are the items listed on the decoding sheet I posted above. And many of those items are only shown if the car was built at Flint or Kansas City which is a bummer.
With all the other options on your red ‘67, it would seem strange without the console. A friend of mine also had a ‘67 GS400 convertible that had factory installed pw, A/C, power bucket seat, disc brakes, but column-shifted automatic and no center console. When I rode in the car it also just felt like something was missing.
Really curious to see if that rear end has a posi tag if it hasn't been removed over the years or any numbers on the axle tubes that still might show? BUQUICK, i'm seeing a rear speaker on your option code for 2R but no radio listed. Is this also a Radio delete, or would Jason have to look if he goes back?
Bryan Woodworth has a ‘68 Skylark that’s low miles and came from the original owner’s family with paperwork. It was ordered with high compression 350, power windows, power buckets but column shift without console. Patrick
I know of two 67 with A/C, PS and manual brakes. I'm getting ready to buy another project 67 GS400 with buckets console crank windows. Option selection even today doesn't make sense to me. Gary
"BUQUICK, i'm seeing a rear speaker on your option code for 2R but no radio listed. Is this also a Radio delete, or would Jason have to look if he goes back?" If an AM radio was standard for that model, then it would not have shown up because it was not an option. Duane
