No the rotor distributes the spark to each individual cylinder. The reluctor vanes attached to the shaft move past each point of the pick up coil, triggering the module to pulse the coil which produces the spark. 360 degrees of distributor shaft rotation should produce 8 sparks of good quality. Your HEI? Not so much.:)

To be clear, and to make sure I'm understanding you and my big homie GSX400.

The spin @ 0:45 is enough rotation to start an engine? Because that's what I'm understanding from your replies.

No, I don't think you are getting a hot enough healthy spark for the engine to run. There aren't enough sparks either.

Did you replace the bad lifter or soak it in oil if you did to make sure it pumps up. 4th rocker arm down is barely moving?
I'm not saying it is the starting issue but I just happened notice it.

Did you ever get to turn it by hand to feel the resistance yourself?

I think what you meant to say is tenacity is important. Disregarding sound advice from individuals who have been doing this a long time, because you aren't hearing what you want to hear is just counter productive as evidenced by this thread. The motor doesn't run. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.:D

The HEI and spark tester video posted on 9/7 and now everyone is 100% sure it's the HEI. But since years of Buick experience results in a dislike of academic discourse. I will make a video with the OEM distro, but as a gambling man I would place my money on a continuation of the pitiful cranking. And another weekend of you all telling me I'm not listening.
Not yet. The lifters are on back order. But will get here eventually.

The pitiful cranking and weak/no spark are 2 different issues. They are unrelated I think unless you have timing chain/gear issues.

Same thing over and over? It didn't start spinning righteously until I primed the oil pump when I had the heads off. I want to get the car started. If the HEI is the source that's a good thing. But you are assuming that I never tried the Distro that was installed when I got the car. I changed the Coil, Cap, rotor, and wires (That I had a confirmed spark from) on day 1. The HEI comes into the picture after early trouble shooting. There is more than youthful naivete behind my apprehension. For the record, the only advice I have not taken, was the compression test because I don't have the tool, and unbolting the flex plate.

The cranking is improved as of late. The consensus is that the HEI is faulty.

I turned it by hand because when I turned it I got a backfire from the carb. And that was the only sign of life I have had since I bought it.

Walk me through turning 180. It has about 90 degrees of action before the vac advance hits the firewall. 180 would also face the vac adv towards the firewall.
