I started taking the accessories off to pull the engine Tuesday. I'll be posting pics of what went wrong with this engine so maybe somebody else can prevent it from happening to them.

It's a 66 Cadillac deVille Convertible with 120K, way too early for this to happen.

I have low (really no) oil volume in the passenger side rocker arm distribution header, which has caused a lifter tick, and it has a rod bearing knock or, maybe, wrist pin slap as well.

I expect we will find bad engine sludging throughout, which is why I'm biting the bullet and tearing the whole thing down. It still runs OK (except for the noises) but I sure don't want to keep driving it and risk blowing it up.

It shows good (30 PSI, the spec.) oil pressure all all temps, which tells me the timing cover isn't too worn, but oil passages are mostly clogged.

On a positive note, I did find out today I have a correct carb for this car!

It's hard to read, but the carb number is 7026031.

This car comes apart just like a Buick!

I'm close. The motor goes in tomorrow. I need to pull my harmonic balancer in a little (1/16 or so) to make my pulleys align correctly. My impact seems capable of doing it. Question: Is it likely I can pull it in too far and damage the crankshaft, or will the bolt break first? It's a 9/16 x 18 grade 8 bolt. I'm cutting it close here.

Here are a couple of pics showing what I think is evidence I can pull it in a little more:[IMG][IMG]

How is this working out? I tried signing up for the Cadillac site but its fubar. 66 Cadillac is one of my favorites.
On your question, could you pull the balancer off and measure how far it is to where it seats on the crank?

Too bad you aren't closer. We use hydraulic nuts to seat gears on tapered shafts. Using the nut and a dial indicator would be light years safer than an impact wrench.

    Good luck.

Everything went fine. The car is on the road. The motor runs nicely, and today it is at a shop to align the front end. I had the suspension rebuilt while the engine was out, but they couldn't align it without the weight of the engine.

I think it has a little oil leak...I expect the builder will take care of me on that.
