I have 2 posi diff's CENTER SECTIONS right now, one is completely gone through with 3:23 detoit locker. Hopefully I can upload the files. The other one is a 3:36 detroit locker, both diff's have 33 splined axles for the 60,61,62 Buick fullsize. I also have a set of NOS 3:42 gears. comes with ring/pinion/3 cans of buick OEM gear lube, ring bolts, pinion nut/washer and pinion seal. Cool set, only seen this one set EVER in 9-3/8" NOS gear sets.
Not a Detroit locker pictured...That is a Dana spicer Power lock Limited slip posi unit. (these 4 spider 2 side gear Posi units were used in all Pontiac, Olds, Chevy, Dana 44, Dana 60, 8.75 Mopar, Amc, for years 1958 -1969 ish era. Or did you not picture the detroit locker unit? Jim
So, my differential is making some noise. Is it correct that bearings are NLA for these? It looks like wheel bearings are available, but not carrier and pinion bearings. That said, has anyone ever done a diff swap on the non-torque tube diffs.? It seems like a 9" would go in pretty easy.
wHAT IS THE NOISE? when is it happening. If it is in turns you need better LSD additive fluid. If it is whirling then a bearing is taking a crap. whine ring and pinion not set up correct or carrier bearings lost some material and or pinion inner and outer could be tipping the maybe the nut backed off ??? MANY things cause noise. Jim
I agree, many things do cause noise. This noise occurs above 25-30 MPH and the frequency/pitch increases with speed. It still there if I put the car in neutral and coast. It doesn't get louder or softer if I modulate the throttle. Turns don't affect the noise at all. All of that, to me suggests a bearing. LSD additive fluid? Is that like "blinker fluid"
No Limited Slip Differential Additive. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...MI9o_fh-ro6QIVi-DICh0QEQDjEAQYASABEgKix_D_BwE
Might be good luck finding it. I have heard FRONT wheel bearings make noises and fooled the owner thinking it was in the rear. VANS are terrible for that stuff.
I went through my manual and there really is no definitive check for bad bearings. They have the same kind comments about the possibility of tiresand other things fooling you. It would sti k to tear all the way in to that thi g and find out it wasn't the bearings and it was something stupid like a front wheel bearing.
It is tough... HAve you checked the end play in the pinion yoke to pinon area. ANY in out movement is NOT correct. If someone ever did a pinion seal they could have tighten the pinion nut too tight and compromised the pinion bearings.
I'll look in to that as well. I inherited the car from my brother. a couple of years ago. He put a lot of miles on it and wasn't very nice to the car. That diff is very beefy, but I imagine he did his share of neutral drops. I found a record where he'd had some service done to the rear end. Fluids changes and seal changes. Checking the pinion would probably be a good idea.
Ok, so I've been driving the car all Summer. The noise has gotten progressively worse. This was actually part of my master plan. Let the noise get to point where it's easy to find, but not so bad that it causes catastrophic failure. It turned out to be the outer rear wheel bearings. I got the new ones in and it's as quiet as a church mouse.
Hi and greeting from freezy Finland! This is a old tree, but i have try. Do You still have any posi to Buick 9 3/8" rear? I'm trying to find posi rear to my 1962 Wildcat rear. Now i have open rear with 3.42 gears. Can anyone help me? Hope you can understand my poor English
Well if the rear is not making noise in turns it is not the limited slip posi unit. The unit parts only moving in turns or shifting lanes etc. Glad you found the culprit - Always nice to repair and problem solved...I have been dealing with a 55 - 100 mph cruise only vibration in the S10 LS1 project. I have replaced everything...JUST PLAIN TIRED OF IT ALL... These kind of headaches want to make you quit playing with vehicles all together.
