'72 Skylark convertible needs new shoes... a while back I bought some dog dishes. I had an issue from 2 different sellers and long story but ended up with (5) 14x6 rims.... (3) are 14x6 rims with 3.5 inch backspacing and (2) are 14x6 with 4 inch backspacing. I want to be able to rotate the tires so really need at least 4 of them to match. Car has rear drum brakes. Had front drums but converted to Rite Stuff front disk brakes that work with 14" rims. Anyone know of which would be better the 4 inch or 3.5 backspacing? And best source for them? Thanks Oh and first 2 pics are the 3.5 backspacing and 3rd pic is red/black rim with 4 inch backspacing.
Your 1st & 2nd Wheels Pictured above are incorrect for what you want to use. You want to use the Wheel with the perfect round center hub hole.
I'm sure there are exceptions to everything. I posted the chart in response to the OP's question about back space. The chart shows you what the factory used.
Thanks. So is this chart saying a 14x6 steel wheels for 68-70 and 71/72 both would have a 4 3/8 backspacing? This car by no means is being brought to "original" specifications.... that being said.... does anyone see any reason why all the wheels I posted would NOT work? Thanks
Thanks. I understand they may be incorrect, but do you think they wouldn't work? I think I am getting to the point where I may just use what I have if they will technically fit, maybe put the 3.5 backspacing on the rear, and 4 inch on the front... this is frustrating, can't find the correct rims at a decent price... ready to take what I have to the scrap yard haha.
The factory back spacing centered the wheel in the wheel well. 4 3/8" was what they used for our cars with 14 X 6" rims. The rims that have 3 1/2" BS are for the later cars, mainly the 81-87 Regals as an example. Would they work on your car? Probably, but you'll have less clearance to the outside of the tire. Might be OK depending on what tire you used. If you are looking for some one to guarantee that it will be fine, you aren't going to get that from me. I would err towards more back spacing, not less, but 4" would be the better choice over 3 1/2".
I’m running the 3 1/2” backspace rally wheels (likely from an ‘80s Regal) on my ‘68 with 225/70/14s and they fit fine. If they clear the rears on a stepchild you should have no problem on a ‘70 up. (I also have 26x9 Hoosier slicks on Wheel Vintiques 15x8s, they fit, too). Patrick
I have a pair of 14x6 gray steelies. Do not know backspacing. They are in the loft of my garage. Bought them back in 2008 & mounted baldies on them so the car could be repainted. I also had a pair 14x6 steelies that had sear snow tires mounted from 1979 & placed them on the rear of my buick for car repainting. Those two (snow) rims & the 4 tires will all be going to the recycle bin. I will retain the grays to sell.
The 15" chrome Buick wheels were 7" wide and had 4 3/8" BS. There was no 15" wheel with 3 1/2" BS, only the 14 X 6". Look at the chart I posted. I had an 86 Regal that I put 15 X 7's on. The inside of the rim would hit the frame at full lock, it needed 3 1/2" BS, but there was no such animal.
I purchased a set of used 225r70x14 & installed them on the orig rallyes. It took me days to clean up the orig rallyes as the previous owner painted the car red & never cover the wheels.
