I have a 1953 Chevy with a 1970 Buick 455 engine. The trans is also a 1970 TH400 unit. I can't ID the rear. I scraped of the dirt and grease off the axle tube and found this stamped in, JG G144 1. There is a number cast into the ribs on the rear E 192. The best I can figure out is it was built by Detroit Gear and the 1 is for the day shift, but I'm lost after that. Someone told me it was a 1975 Apollo rear. Can anyone help me. Thanks

144 day of the year, 1 is first shift

JGG is the axle code.....JG is the gear ratio and G is the manufacturing plant.

Remove the pumpkin cover and see what gears you have as they could have been changed.

    Can you provide a pic?

Can't get a picture yet. I also found out there is a casting number on the front drivers side of the housing on the rib. Maybe that will also help. So far, I found a site which is for Chevy Novas.(NovaResource.com) They have a lot of J codes... JB JC,JF,JL JN, etc. but no JG. These all seem to fall into the 1972-1973 years. I guess I'll have to find a book which lists codes for Buick rears, If there is a book for that.

You can't post pictures until you have 10 posts I believe. Hopefully it is an 8.5 10 bolt. One way to ID that rear is to look for the square lugs at the 5 and 7 O'Clock positions as indicated by the arrows in this picture. Also, the 8.5 uses cap screws and brackets to secure the rear u-joint to the rear yoke.

If you e-mail any pictures you have to the address in my signature, I'll post them for you.

It' got the lugs at 5 and 7 o'clock. Definitely an 8.5" ring gear. I'll jack the car up and get the casting number on Sunday. A Buick Apollo is basically the same car as the other "X" bodies: Oldsmobile Omega, Chevy Nova and Pontiac Ventura. The rear axle should be generic to all these cars shouldn't they?

No, the 8.5" is not available to all.......some had 7.5" rear axles.....since you have an 8.5" you have the best and it will fit all X-bodies.

1972 started the 8.5 rears in the x-body cars. THat was standard and only size until 1976ish maybe early 75???

IN 1975 1976 77 78 79 80 the 7.5 rear was used in the low horse and or small cube motors... SO if you hd a V8 you probably got the 8.5 rear and if you had a v6 you got the 7.5 ...Just a rough idea to help. Jim
