440 Isn't Mike Wowk building another one ? Don't know if it's a pure stocker or for FAST. Any progress with the car Mike ?
I think he stalled 6 months ago, he was trying to figure out what color stripe on the car would not make him look fat.........
Show me the money yes he may be spot on , but .... but as far as FAST is concerned one AIN'T DONE IT YET ou:
Relax guys.I just need a minute The first race next year you will see a 11 second wedge. I don't think we have seen one yet because nobody has really tried yet.I'm sure Wowk could have done it.I'm sure doug could have if he really tried. It is a simple fact that it just has not been done yet. It's not a matter of "it can't be done"
Why would you? If you are going to chose a car that had 440 power available, Hemi power was also available. Your power per dollar spent is going to be way better with a Hemi. You'd have to really love 440's.
Power per dollar? You sure about that joel? That is a pretty tall statement when you can spend over 100 bucks on intake bolts and all they do is hold the intake on.2000 bucks for 2 bare casting cyl heads,1000 on a stock intake,2500 on a block,2500 on rockers,1400 on carbs,1000 on a air cleaner. Some where inside of those figures my 493 was bought. Will it make hemi power? No it probably won't.Will it be close? yes and at about half the bucks
I will respectfully disagree, for all of the reasons that Tom noted. :TU: However, I will also respectfully admit that there is a reason why the Hemi has dominated Top Fuel and other professional classes. It ain't no slouch when set on "Kill" ......... :beer
Ain't no L-88's in Top Fuel An L-88 makes pretty decent power when set on KILL too :3gears: I hear that NHRA banned L-88's from running in Top Fuel because they had an unfair advantage
Ok, if you are shooting for 550 horse, the wedge is cheaper up front. But the higher your HP goal, the cheaper the Hemi gets in comparison. Plus you have to consider the resale value of the stuff when you are done. Nice vintage stuff like Hemi heads, intakes, carbs, rocker gear, etc, is expensive when you buy it and more expensive when you sell it. I think that with some inginuity and some scounging, a guy can put together a 700+ horse F.A.S.T. legal hemi for 15K +/-. And 5 years from now you can part it out or sell it for 15K. How do you beat that? Plus you don't have to do that much $$ to the Hemi stuff to make the power. The carbs, intake and exhaust manifolds are pretty much good to go, and $1000 worth of head porting will get you 400+ cfm for that 700+horse figure. How much would you have to pay to have the mainfolds and heads of a wedge ported to that level? BTW, I certainly do not want to discourage anyone from building a wedge, and or proving me wrong. I look forward to seeinging TOms and any other wedge cars out their kicking names and taking tail! :beer
I have to agree with Joel on this one, for the power why bother with a 440? I has always seemed to me the point of F.A.S.T. is to win the quick eight. Allowing the additional modifications make it possible for cars to be competative that perhaps would not be without mods. So don't show up at a gun fight with a knife. I know, I know..... I'll get the "we do it for the camaraderie" speech. If that were the case Wayne Nelson wouldn't get so much grief about his Vette, because other than having a winning combo he certainly hasn't done anything wrong. This is an editorial, reply time will be granted to any one who can post on this site.
"I has always seemed to me the point of F.A.S.T. is to win the quick eight." Ok, I'll argue that one. I agree that winning the quick 8 is a factor for some people, but not everyone. If that was the main point, then their would be 20 L88 Vettes under construction right now. It seems to me that most guys want to run a car that they really like. No matter if a Vette or anything else seems to be the best combination for ET, I bet Glasco's will always have a Pontiac, Gessler will always have the Buick, and I will always have a Hemi powered 67 GTX. Guys just want to do the best they can with their favorite car. :Comp:
And when that fails, they gripe and moan about how that particular model line should have never been allowed in the class! You guys should be thanking Wayne for taking it easy on y'all by building an "L88"...because there were better Corvette combos offered, especially in '69... ------------------------- Hillbilly Racing Team "Expert fishermen are master baiters..."
Hey Rob, just because a couple guys have complained, (good natured ribbing or serious??) o No:, don't paint us all with the same brush! ou: For the most part Wayne has received his well earned accolades from the other racers. :TU:
So let me get this straight ...... 1. The 440 doesn't have the potential of the Hemi. 2. The Hemi is the KING dog of the Mopar camp. 3. The Chevy is still a half second quicker than any of 'em. Just makin' sure I got it right. :TU: PS - And I'm a Mopar guy ........
Well, so far, anyways, as Joel says, stay tuned, all things change. And we all know to well, when pride and ego overtake the wallet, anything is possible in the realm of racing......
