I’m with you, I won’t run a diesel. My run a L-96 6.0 with a mild cam upgrade, long tube headers, and a tune. With the 6 speed trans it’s a great combo for towing, no complaints! A person could easily run a 4.10 rear end gear and still cruise on the highway without revving it out. Adding a turbocharger would be awesome. But just a cam and headers you can get 100 HP over the 360 Hp rating. with those mods I get a consistent 16 mpg which is pretty good for a heavy truck. Towing it’s still over 13 mpg

My buddy bought a ramp truck eons ago but never put it on the road. Apparently insurance was sky high since it's considered a commercial vehicle? Annual registration fee was high too. I think it's a square body Chev. It's been sitting in his drive ever since.

Depending on the state, but I think a vehicle like this could be insured and registered under recreational use and (not for hire) status. possibly display and vocational use (QQ, or historic). I'm also thinking of the class 7 & 8 motorhome CDL exemption.

Yea it's no big deal,..you just put not for hire,...we had a rollback one time with the million dollar bonded insurance,..it wasn't that bad either

Cab I knew was junk,..but the butchery committed stretching the frame and the bed itself is scrap and at that point I'm like what's the point,..bought it sight unseen had I looked at i would have passed oh well

Throw an old rusted Buick on the bed and park it out front of your shop as yard art.

While that looks cool going down the road, it's not the best setup once you get to the track for a multi-day event.. Here's why:

    1. No place to relax, get out of the weather, ect.. sitting in a truck cab during a rainstorm at the track sucks.. compared to having a motor home or enclosed trailer.

    2. Unlike with an enclosed trailer, you have no security or protection for your vehicle and cargo.

    3. Nothing to drive to a hotel.. unless you pack it all up, or leave stuff unattended.. And even then, try to park that thing in a busy hotel parking lot, let alone a restaurant.

I get the "cool look" but I guess maybe I am past looking cool, and more interested in being comfortable..

That would work for single day events, on perfect weather days.. but that's about it.. It's why you don't see more guys restoring/using them.

If I had one with a crew cab or sleeper it would be perfect to take more than one car to an event like BG. Usually sleep/camp in the back of my truck at the campground.

There are crew cabs with a box for the car to be enclosed.

Partially due to this thread, I've been spending more time than I have looking up ramp trucks and such today....

I smell diesel occasionally when filling my GMC, usually smell gas more than the diesel.

I built a ramp truck from a 7.3 powered E-450 however my insurance company wouldn’t cover it to haul cars.

I love having my motor home and enclose trailer. I dont need everyone asking what under the hood ofvthe chevelle like I had for years with our open trailer. I like being able to leave the car inside when not racing......I like not having to pack and unpack the truck......judt the fridge. I love having a fridge bot working about ice or water logged food..
I.love not forgetting to repack so etching tool wise. I love not using public bathroom and having a shower.

Plus the motorhome doubles for family vacations too.

To each their own, but if you figured in your holy rate to restore you could get a decent used home. We paid 12k for a 2000 tiffin with only 40k on it, had clearly been stored inside and hardly used. Only things I didn't get was 22.5 tires......but this has 6 brand new 19.5 14 ply. And a real oven to bake my breakfast biscuits in. But its 32 of racing heaven and comfort.......and oddly enough the v10 gets 8-9 mpg just the home on vacations and 7-8 when I drop 10k more on her but with the 28ft enclosed. Took a little getting used to 5.13 gears and it living at 3000 on the highway. But honestly it drives and tows better than i thought. For me I won't look back.

But these ramp truck and for certain cool. But he'll if I could find a 6 door dually for reasonable id sell my yukon xl 2500 and k3500 crew cab
