Theory is true.. experience shows completely opposite results.

Done many a hyd cam with sold lifters.. years of service, no issues.. harder on valve train.. sure, but within service limits.

Hyd lifter on a solid cam does not work.. ramps are way too aggressive, and they are always rpm limited. Had one customer who sent me a motor he could not figure out, thought he had a the Hyd version (H or HB) of the old KB Mark 5.. turns out it was a Mark 5S, the solid version.. he could not get that thing to rev over 5K to save his life, with hyd lifters on it, even running zero preload. Dropped in and lashed a set of solids, and he was good to go.

The tight lash solid lifer deal, especially the roller cam stuff, is an everyday thing in the performance industry. Everyone I know of is doing it. My last one, a roller cam under cast alum valve covers, was so quiet you would swear it still had the hyd roller lifters in it. That particular one was done to extend the rpm range of the engine out to 7000, so he could get his race car to the traps under power. 6400 rpm was the limit, even on the "good" hyd roller lifters.

    FYI

The next question is which solid lifters work and are available? I know comp 852-16 solids have the Buick seat height, anyone using these?

I've run Chev solid lifters on my nailhead for years - the difference in cup height was within range of my adjustable pushrods and I ran .003 on the intake and .005 on the exhaust cold. I'm not sure where you install the cam makes a difference to the lifters - theyre doing the same job as the hydraulics, just a little quicker.

When installing solid flats on a hyd flat cam,I just set them at zero lash. Done.

Never had the balls to do it cause I was told the exhaust valve stem would grow more than the block/head combo from the direct heat.. Guess I was wrong?

Doing it more and more since all of the recent hyd flat lifter are trash and a solid roller isn’t always practical. No issues to speak of.

What part # are you using ? My current cam is giving up at 5300 and in talking to Jim we kinda ruled out fuel and valve spring so soilids are looking like a winter project..
