My 52 Buick was in a wreck. It had 40 year old lacquer paint on it. The lacquer had held up real well and still looked real good. I am planning on repainting the whole car. Changing to a modern paint would require a lot of extra work, door jams, etc. I found a place on the internet that sells lacquer paint. But I am always skeptical of things that seem too good to be true. Has anyone heard of or used the Restoration Shop Auto Color Library. They claim they are based in San Diego but can not sell lacquer in California (I live in Oregon.).
Looks like the parent company is called "TCP Global" and they seem legit, but there are a fair number of complaints about customer service on yelp... Hope that helps.
I've bought lacquer paint and supplies from TCP Global, and they shipped to me here in California. It's been awhile, so maybe the state cracked down on that.
Strip and redo in two stage. Lacquer isn’t going to match your color anyway. 40 years ago lacquer was dated technology
Maybe I got lucky but I've purchased lacquer paint from TCP Global twice in the past year and had no issues. Deliver time was less than 1 week each time. The guy taking the order was in California but the paint was shipped to me from North Carolina. I would consult with your painter on the type of paint to use for your car. I suspect that he will not recommend using lacquer.
I buy from TCP Global and have not had any issues. They flat out tell you that they are not Amazon and orders may take a week or two. Also, they do own the Auto Color Library and when you buy a color from them they store a spray-out card of your paint and will use the card to match if you need more of the same. There is a video of this info on their site. When you enter the factory paint code they offer the paint in Lacquer, Base-Clear or single stage Urethane and give you the price per quart or gallon right there on the page.
I purchased my lacquer Saturn yellow for my GSX in Longview,Washington about 8 years ago. I drove up there from the Portland area. EVERGREEN PAINT SUPPLY if I remember correctly...Their in the downtown area.
