I bought some of these dorman exhaust donut studs to use on my 455 exhaust manifolds. I'm curious, the short threaded end goes into the manifold itself. The long threaded end goes thru the collectors and holds it all together. So, do I use never seize on the studs into the manifolds so they will come out again, or do I use Loctite to hold those studs firmly in place? I've been told both things. What say you?
I'm of the opinion that re-torquing a fastener is easier than trying to extract a broken one, especially on something that isn't holding the car together like a lug nut. I'd go for the anti-seize and use some all metal deformed thread locknuts or Nordlocks. I have wondered if someone makes a chemical compound that both prevents unwanted fastener movement and prevents corrosion/broken bolts. Does regular Loctite 343 (for example) do both?
Yes. It's called "Milk of Magnesia". We used it on jet engine hot sections, works both ways. As locker and antiseize.
I used those or ones like them on a 72 350 we had, used with anti-seize and I didn't have any issues coming loose. Fernando
Good to know about Milk of Magnesia! I am also a fan of Remflex gaskets. If this is for the collector you could also use some Stage 8 locking fasteners for extra insurance, depends on how fancy you want to be. I once used an ARP head stud as an exhaust stud because of the hex broach and better material!
