THM 400 filter

When you look for an engine oil filter there can be some quality differences between brands. Are there also quality differences between THM 400 filters and brands to avoid?

I avoid fiber element, and use brass screen for flow reasons. The fiber can reduce flow significantly from clutch material and by the time you realize it, damage to discs and or pump is done.

If you want, you can add inline magnetic high volume flow filters, and change them every engine oil change.

I use them (Magnafine) and have pressure and temp gage and have never been out of spec on temp/pressure.

It also protects the stacked plate cooler.

 

Thanks, but that is not what i meant. I meant a stock filter set, quality differences between brands such as AC Delco, Wix, Pro-Gauge, ATP, etc.

 

You usually cannot go wrong with Wix filters. Usually available at NAPA.

Thanks. What does AFAIC mean? I learned something new. Is the brass that much better? Did it come from the factory with a brass filter? Is brass necessary when you follow the service manual? Thanks.

 

Thanks Larry. The AC Delco TF231 is the original replacement part. I would think for the original "boulevard cruiser" i am i would be safe with this filter. Besides flow filtering is important too right? I still have the old filter which came off in 2006 which has the old "AC" letter design on it and it could be the factory original filter. I will check later what kind of filter that is.

 

The Allison Type brass screen filter comes into play in performance type driving (launch) and not completely required for a cruiser/ driver. Most transmission guys that do rebuild recommend the brass type filter for optimum oil flow to the pump at all times. Worth the extra few bucks? Probably.
