What is the correct exhaust pipe exit location for a 68 Riv (GS)? My car has the original 4 muffler exhaust (well, you know2 mufflers under the floor pans and 2 resonators mounted vertically just before the tailpipes exit), and it has to be the most restrictive exhaust ever (before 1975). I am replacing the entire system with 2 inch duals and have two questions: A) should the 2 new mufflers be under the floorpans or at the rear, and 2) my car has sharp turn downs at the bumper is that correct? Do we think that is too restrictive, or is it OK? TIA Frank Brooks ROA 10634
Sounds like you have a factory Walker type exhaust on the Riv. Yes, the sharp turndowns are correct. The resonator includes the exhaust tip. Walker listed an eliminator pipe years ago to do away with the factory resonator. I would say to install the new mufflers in the stock location and run either an eliminator pipe or a glasspack in the resonator location. They seem to be a little too loud with just a muffler. Our Rivs have very special exhaust hangers. Be careful when removing them as they are made of a very special metal called "unobtainium"
Unless you are Jason Cook "The Parts Encyclopedia" :Smarty: :Smarty: Those hangers look familiar?
Riviera exhaust Hey Frank - I'm running a stock system (Walker mufflers - no resonators). It's not too noisy and sounds just right with the BBB 430 ! Jason is absolutely correct about some of the exhaust system hangers ! :beer :TU:
I have a good exhaust guy. My hangars are OK I think-- but for my own education, what is special about them, and can they not be fabbed at an exhaust shop? Frank
68 riv exhaust Ta Performance Sells A Very Nice System In 2.5 Or 3" Mandrel Bent Pipe (without Mufflers), And It Is Manufactured With The Resonators. Very Nice System To Consider If You Have Not Purchased One Yet. My 68 Had 3" Off Shorty Headers And Runs Through Flowmaster 40 Series, Dumps Right After The Muffler-sounds Awesome To Me-i Don't Understand Too Noisy Though.
Riviera exhaust Frank - Some of the hangers were designed specifically to fit appropriate locations, and are model year specific. You can always rig something up to hang your system from, but it will not be original. If your looking to keep your car original - the original exhaust components (hangers, brackets, etc.) can be hard to find, since no repops are available. :beer
I wouldn't do it again. I wasn't very pleased with the fit of the 2.5" TA eaxhaust I put on my '70. It required modification to the front pipes, muffler hangers, and some finessing of the rear pipes with a hammer to clear the tires. For the money I spent, I should have had a shop make it from scratch. With a little more R&D, they could have had a good product.
When I first bought my 69, the exhaust ended at the mufflers. For me, the car was just way too loud. It had a horrible drone at idle. I consider them frst and foremost luxury cars. I know many of us hot rod them, but I like em bone stock and quiet as can be. The addition of a glasspack to replace the factory resonator, gives it a mellow growl. Theres a reason all those flat spots are in the factory pipes. It get a little tight over the rear axle by the springs.
Know this is an older thread, but hope some folks can respond. I have a couple of comments/questions. 1) Resonators. I thought Resonators were intended to be placed between the engine and the muffler. Did a 1968 Riviera GS come from the factory with Resonators? 2) If so, aren't they located just in front of the exhaust tips? Thanks.
All the stock resonators I have seen go after the muffler, close to the tail pipes. And yes, the 1968 Riviera did have resonators,
