Anyone use these type axles on trailers? Any cons? I picked up a used trailer for a decent price that has them. So far I like it, it "feels" solid when pulling. Is dead silent from suspension squeaks and the bearing lube system seems easy though I was no able to push old lube out 3 of the 4 wheel bearing assemblies. Inspection on one of the 3 seems that there is plenty of lube throughout. All in all trailer is in good almost great condition.
Sure, my 1994 26 foot enclosed car hauler has them, they are as good as new, after many, many thousands of loaded miles. Considering a pair for my open trailer.. JW
Thanks guys. To be honest my only real concern was the claimed lifespan of the internal rubber bands. But if Jim has been running a trailer since the 90s then what little concern I have is gone.
A picture of my setup. 1st trip almost 2k miles and no problems except I unknowingly dragged a chain so it will need to be replaced. Trailer was fantastic.
Nothing really wrong with torsion axle on a lite duty trailer. Only negative about them is when you drive over lets say a speed bump One axle will become air bound putting all the weight on the other axle.... For a boat trailer I'm not a fan of them, Some ramps can be steep and the front axle has to pack ALL the weight... Also a torsion is lower to ground than a leaf spring which makes towing nicer, Lower to the ground is also a con.. The boat guy will need to park trailer on some treated 2X10's to let the drives down or the outboard motor down,, or dig a hole...... Also a torsion axle will die faster than a leaf do to the rubber in the assemble.....
