Trunk lid pops open!

OZGS455 Oh what a wonderful day!

Dunno where to post this, maybe the body section but can't find it.
Anyway it's only under severe off the line acceleration and high speed run that my trunk lid pops open
I notice it at the end of the strip as I'm slowing I glance in the rearview mirror and the trunk is open.
I bring the car to a smooth stop as I'm afraid of bending the hinges if I stop too quick.
Hadn't driven the car for 9 months and took it out the other night for a cruise to the coin op carwash to get the dust off it.
A run down the freeway to dry it off late at night.
Took an offramp then through a roundabout and onto a long on ramp that led to the road I'd turned off of.
Booted it hard and the 295s gripped and launched the car forward at a great rate, I merged onto the freeway and slowed then noticed my trunk lid flapping in the breeze.
A Skyline pulled up abreast of me slowing as I slowed almost to walking pace , I thought he was trying to tell me my trunk was open.
But from the revving he was doing he wanted a race!
I pulled off to the side not much room to stop but wasn't gonna risk the hinges , got out slammed it shut as the Skyline took off.
Surely mine isn't the only 71 Skylark that does this?
Maybe the torque is twisting the body making the trunk release.
That's the only thing I can think of.
What can I do about it?
Got the AutoSpectacular coming up at the local strip next Sunday and will be making a few passes down the 1/4 mile and would like to stop this happening.
Can't find a volunteer to ride in the trunk to observe what's happening!

You need a car with a higher top speed if you want to beat the mighty Skyline in a race, no need to use the old "trunk popping open" excuse, they have heard it all before....

Is the car equipped with an electric trunk release?

    No it's not.
Is there a better section to post this?

Could the torque be twisting the body enough to pop the trunk latch I wonder?
    Only happens on aggressive launches.

I drove around for years without a trunk lock.
I used a heavy brick with a rope around it, attached it inside the trunk to the lid: trunk popping problem solved!

I would get another latch,...but no the body isn't twisting,....I've been low 1.40 60fts,....thousands upon thousands of guys have gone faster with no trunk popping open

    Latch must be barely catching.....

For a temp fix use a bungee cord so that if it does pop open it can’t come up very far. I would adjust or replace the latch.

Clean, lube and adjust the latch. If the decklid is closed pull up on the decklid from each side individually before cleaning. This will tell you what is going on.
Take a piece of tape and put it on the body strike and close the decklid. Open the decklid and look at the contact area on the tape.
I have seen the latches dirty and dry not allowing full movement of the assembly..

Thanks fellas, I'll get onto it and report back.
It's ridiculous owning a car that I can't boot off the line!

The actual cage striker may be worn also,...that would need a little weld to build it back up

Try jerking it open with your hands.
The latch sounds like its BARELY holding it down.

Well I've tried opening it with my bare hands yeah...try a bit harder you reckon?
Stomping the throttle wide open will pop it straight away!
