Should be ready for breakin now. Attached before and after pictures. Notice I kept the original patina on air cleaner and radiator cover. Now if it only runs again! ;) IMG_20210915_165605_01.jpg 20220324_202258.jpg

Have about 300 miles on rebuilt motor now. Still using a bit of oil. Hastings Moly Rings on silvolite pistons. Changed filter after cam breakin. Added over a quart of the 10/30 vr1 valvoline. Does this sound like acceptable usage at 300 miles?

Also a slight lifter tick until pressure is up. I measured preload on lifters on front and back and i bought pushrods 1 step shorter accordingly.

I could reinstall 1 step longer pushrod (my original length) on the noisy one.

    :( Help.

Having trouble with same issues this week. Motor is still using oil and a lifter is still ticking at start up. I removed valve cover and wiggled rocker arms to see if i could find any excess clearance while rotating engine by hand. One rocker arm seemed a little loose so I inserted my slightly longer original pushrod. So am I just getting leak down on a bad lifter? Any chance issues will heal with more mileage?

A lot better diagnosticians on here than me but the oil useage doesn't sound good. Smoking?

Maybe the rings did not seat totally yet, I used Comp Cams pro magnum lifters they never make noise on start up.
A qt does seem like a lot and it is, got a leak?

Haven't gone past half throttle yet. No smoke that we see. No leaks. Only one ticking lifter but happens EVERY time at start up until oil pressure gets up.

short of switching out the lifter I don’t think there is another solution. Adding lifter pre load won’t help. I would start doing full throttle blasts, the rings likely aren’t seated.

Compression braking will seat rings better than anything. Did you hone the cylinders? Chrome rings take a long time to seat. Did you do any valve guide work?

I talked to Tim at ta performance today. He said I should be able to confirm the one leaky lifter by pushing down on the pushrods to find the one that compresses more easily than others?

Reputable machine shop bored .30 over and replaced valves and guides. Moly rings. I will try to do more driving in second around town with some engine breaking. I really don't want to stomp on it till I hit about 500 miles. I haven't changed oil yet, just the filter. Oil doesn't seem dirty. Should I change oil and filter before I start really punching it?
