Getting back into my '71 Stage 1 - What are these wires for?

    Hello!!!

After a 9mo hiatus in which I sold my business, I'm just now getting back to my '71 GS Stage 1. The current project is replacing the top of the dash due to rot (holes). Since I have the top of the dash cut off, I went through the wiring to remove a bunch of the PO's aftermarket accessory wiring that powered nothing at all. During that exploration, I found several wires that have either been disconnected or lead to nothing, and I'm posting here to find out what they're for. I found...

    1) a coiled up bunch of factory wiring someone had pulled out of the engine bay harness at the firewall and balled up behind the brake booster. The wires coming out of the harness are pink and black with a white stripe, and they have several sockets and factory splitters in the entire mess. See pic.

    2) A 3 wire plug coming out of the factory harness under the dash. The wires are brown, black, and white, and I've pictured the plug.

Can anyone tell me what these 2 multi wire leads are for?

    Thank you.

    Chris

Wish I could be of help, looks like a minor mess. Following to see what wiser members have to say.

If you have the chassis manual it should have wiring diagrams with the wire colors.

Fred - I do have a manual and I did check the wiring diagram. For the wiring in the engine compartment, as far as I can tell, the wire is for a solenoid on the carburetor with a branch for the transmission. The wiring is not included on the main wiring diagram as far as I can tell, but I did see what appeared to be the wiring on the engine compartment diagram, but it does not mention any colors.

I was not able to find any wiring with the color combination for the 3 wire plug under the dash, but I will keep looking.

Darron - Actually, the wiring is in pretty decent shape, given that it's 51 years old. Like most muscle cars, previous owners have spliced a few circuits in for accessories that no longer exist, but thankfully nothing was butchered horribly.

The pink wires are part of the transmission controlled spark emissions device. You don't need that unless you are going concourse.

the 3-wire plug is for the hood tach.

Thanks for the response. Can I use that wiring for the dash tach? I'm redoing the instrument cluster, so I elected to go with a dash tach rather than the (non-working) clock. I bought the tach from Stage1.

That's what I thought. The wiring diagram was kinda tough to read and I had to go to the area specific pages (engine bay) to find what looked like the wiring I was looking for, but of course, they don't provide the wiring colors in those views.

You don't need to, there should be two sockets (gray wires) for the clock or dash tach illumination. There is one brown signal wire to the - side of the coil. See if that is still in the engine bay. If not, just run your own.
