if you want more initial timing without adding extra timing then add a mr gasket bushing to restrict the mechanical advance.

Anyone know if a larger than the black, 18 degree bushing, will fit in an MSD billet dist?

I do not know if there is a larger bushing for the MSD than the black. thinking about bumping up the initial? then holding back the total. It would make the engine respond quicker out of the hole.

^^ I've used brass hobby tubing over delco pins to do exactly that.:)

18* is the largest AFAIK. You can lock out the mechanical advance and run constant timing, just need a start retard. Been running that way for many years.

TA dist. has 20 deg. of advance, initial of 16 deg, total 36 all in at 2600 rpm. I have been playing with the timing for a long time and this engine likes 16 deg. initial the best.

Have not watched to see what the drop is.

Larry, does your start retard retard timing when shutting off to prevent run-on?
My cam likes beacoup initial but I have to leave it in gear to kill it cleanly.

Yes, the start retard is built into my MSD Part number 6520 Digital 6 ignition box. It pulls 20* of timing while cranking. Once the engine starts and exceeds 800 RPM, it adds the 20* back in. When the engine goes below 500 RPM, it pulls the timing out again.

Does that let your eng conk out cleanly idling in Park ?
My cam likes full timing at idle.:)
But my idle in park is 1,100.
    In gear it's 850.

Yes, it shuts off cleanly. I'm at 900 in Park, 750 in gear. Locked out at constant 35* timing, cranks at 15*, 10* vacuum advance.

That one with the flats probably lets it fit the MSD bushing slot.
    Good find....:)
