So when you colored yours did you spray it all then buff the ridges an letters back off of did you mask all that
Look good Larry! Wonder if my Postons were 1st casts. I couldn't use a socket on a stock cover bolt. Not enough room.
Masked it all with blue painters tape, then used a razor blade to cut the detail out. Had to do some small touch up where i could still see black near the ribs. I ordered some Molotow chrome paint pens. Going to see how that looks on the ribs and Buick letters.
When Dave Tumas and I did my valve covers we just painted over everything and then used a flat piece of sandpaper to clean off the raised fins and lettering. Works really well and looks good. I have never been a fan of them in the black they come in. I like the in red to match the engine or in my case the GM blue to match my engine.
Got the paint pens today. Used the thickest one for the job (4mm). I am happy with the result. The surface is rough so it is difficult to get a uniform paint covering. There is a definite shine to it now.
I got mine on Ebay, but you can buy them from lots of sources, https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=molotow+chrome+pen
I bought a set of these back in 03. They were not flat and needed a cleanup. One actually rocked on the bench. These were not made by Poston. From what I remember the supplier took a bunch of stock back from Poston as they were closing their doors. It was covered in a few threads here. I can't say if they are selling whats left of the old stock or if they produced more. I would think if they made another run of them that they would have removed the "Poston" from the casting.. Anyway I painted them flat black and have been happy with them.
When I ordered the set from Roland, I questioned him about them being flat. He assured me that they check every cover before they are shipped. Mine were nice and flat.
I taped them, but either way will work. I found it really easy to scrape off any paint on the letters/ribs with a razor blade
I wouldn't sand the ribs down. The raw aluminum will eventually corrode. I would wipe the ribs down with lacquer thinner as the paint is drying. taping would work but seems tedious to me.
