Top Secret Benisek Intake Manifold ( old school )

    Here is an intake manifold that was bolted to a older Benisek engine that I have.
    I am sure most people thought that was the way he was running Nitrous.
    Not sure how many people collaborated on this project, Dave Benisek, Jim Bell, maybe Mike Tomaszewski or even Oliver Colteryahn.
    Nice cooling chamber. Started off as a SP Stage 1 Dominator.
    Anyways, here are some pics, anybody recognize it?

    That's a unique Idea, that's for sure.. and I bet it worked well, as long as you could keep the water cold enough. Cooling a wildcat manifold to 100* on the dyno was worth about 11 hp. Bet you that one was even more effective, as long as you could keep it sealed up.

    Probably a one of a kind piece there. You should see what Doug Jones knows about it.

    I would not bet against that, could have been Ollie's idea. I have one of Ollie's Cool Runner intakes that has his name on the bottom. When he sold that design, it was supposed to continue to have his name on the bottom (Per Ollie anyway), not sure if that happened.

    I'd love to put icewater thru my Cool Runner...never have been able to get to it. I figure even without the water it's a cool running intake but it would be cool to turn a pump on and off and get the intake to same temp before every pass if not just for consistency. Then have it turned on to cool going down track. I wouldn't doubt it could be worth a tenth and 1 1/2 miles per hour.

    All you need is a small pond pump, a cooler and some hoses... built that setup in Tim Hol's 84 Regal in about 04... used it at the the drag strip, it was something that would be fine during a test day, but not tremendously practical for bracket racing. We really did not see any difference on the drag strip. On the dyno, it was worth about 11 numbers, so we did not expect it to make a huge difference, and it did not. On the dyno, we cooled the manifold to 100*, and then could do a pull before it heated back up. Not so on the track, where you have to start the car, do a burnout, Pre-Stage, Stage... and by then the manifold is well on it's way back to coolant temp.

    I suppose if you carried a 20 gallon ice water tank with you, you might be able to keep it cool, but that weight would slow you down..

    The water thing on the Cool Runner/SPX is more of a gimmick than anything, the reality is that I like that manifold for high HP combos, because of it's plenum and runner volume. It comes right out of the box and makes up to 650 HP with no extra work.. and is capable of 800 plus NA when ported.

    It is the same intake on Jim Byer's 1300+HP blown Tomahawk, and that one just got a port match.

    Just like the NHRA guys that pour ice all over the top of their intake when they are in class eliminations, the larger surface area of the experimental intake here did probably work pretty well. But the small passage under the plenum just doesn't expose enough surface area.

    Jim, use dry ice in a cool can and run alcohol through the system, won't believe how cold the manifold gets. Worth over a tenth. Ask me how I know.

    How much volume in your tank Gary?

    We did do the dry Ice, but not the alky.

    I think it was a little over a gallon . Don't use it any more, index racing and bracket racing just requires a throttle stop adjustment, lol

    That's a cool piece of history.We ran dry ice and alky through our intakes over 20 years ago in street eliminator in BG.Alot of the guys did.

    On another page it indicates it was on Dave Beniseck's car.

    I subscribed to K-B "Buick News" from the late 70's to the mid 90's when it ended I believe. I found it when looking for your header info.

    Buick people are the best!! Thank you, that is super awesome.
    It sucks that our Buick's don't get the automotive respect they deserve.

    Engine was tested in an Electra,...they were hoping to use it to better propel the big boats after the comp drops
