This doesn't have the tabs at 5 and 7, but is it still an 8.5?

No, are those holes threaded or smooth?

8.5's have the straps and bolts, 8.2's have the U bolts.

It is smooth, so 8.2? Does that seem right for my 69 Stage 1?

I had planned to put my 3.42 ring and pinion in the new rear end that came with my replacement frame. Unless that rear end is an 8.2 I won't be able to do that, correct?

This is the replacement that is in the car. It looks like 8.2 as well.

I was trying to get this picture on with the one of the yolks, but lying on the pavement in the hot AZ sun I messed up.

There were a number of of 8.2 10 bolts. There was a 64-67 8.2 10 bolt that came in various Buick, Olds, and Pontiac cars, and the 68-70 BUICK ONLY 8.2 10 bolt. They are different rear ends. I don't know exactly what you have there, so I can't tell you definitely.

I like to try to call this rear a 8.25 so we can differ the 8.2 early 64-67 Buick from the 68-70 Buick
the 68 - 70 Buick castings are 700 and 724 last three digits...IF so ...yes your going to be hard pressed to find the gears for this rear.
Fabcraft was making them...BUT they are not giving a ton of confidence that they will be producing these ring and pinions again.
I wish they would give the specs to a bigger company like Randys world wide or Motive gear and have them make the gears so we can keep these rear usable instead of everyone dumping them into the scrap yards. :(
It is a well built rear and designed to handle good power.... But with out parts that is just not going to keep them under cars.

Jim is correct. It is the 68-70 Buick rear. 8.2” or whatever you want to call it.
It’s a posi. What is the ratio that is in it now?

In the car now is the replacement which drives like a high 2 ratio. My factory original is a 3.42. If that gear is serviceable can they be switched?

These are the only numbers I could find on the currently installed axle. If they would help I can do a tracing.

no those are check digits... for comparison ....
look passenger side below or above the webbing should be there. 6-7 digit number cast in ...larger numbers than the check digits.

if the rear is in the car...Likely you will need a mirror to see above the webbing.
I am very familiar with the casting characteristic of the 8.25 and YOU have it. :( sorry to say.

It isn't a problem for me if the rear end is weak for hard use because I am not driving that way. I am trying to keep the car original because it is a numbers matching car. That is why I want to switch to my original 3.42 gear set. If the two rear ends are the same I should be able to do that correct?

    monzaz Jim

    Ok...totally misunderstanding

So the rusty one at the beginning is one rear with 3.42 posi and the shiney black one is the open?

  20. monzaz

    monzaz Jim

YES they are the same rear. 68 - 70.

BUT do not always think you can just bolt in the one guts from the other and just be done. YOU will still need to double check backlash pattern depth etc.
I wish they were all machined that well...lol.
Give it a shot see how it goes.
THEY are totally interchangeable guts for sure. But again I say whether the pinion shim depth and carrier shims are going to work out exact is another question all together.
