    Jim Jones Wretched Excess

    Older combination.

    Full weight '70 GS.
Untouched 45,000 mile '71 short block (std bore - cast pistons)
'70 Stage 1 heads, no porting, shaved enough to ensure they were flat, 0.020" steel head gaskets.
KB MkC118 cam and KB "Stage 1" springs, stock replacement timing set. Stock steel rockers.
    B4B intake no porting.
    '71 7041242 Q-jet with stock (75 Jets - 45b primary rods - AU secondary rods) Stage 1 jetting.
MSD 6AL ignition box - Chrysler magnetic pick up in GM distributor w/20 degree(at crank) total advance in by 2300 rpm. Total timing set to 30 degrees BTDC.
MT headers, 2-1/2" exhaust with Sonic (short) Turbo mufflers.
Too loose (3600 flash stall) 10" TCI converter on rebuilt TH 400.
    12 Bolt rear w/3.90:1 gears.
    M&H DOT 275-60-15 rear tires.

Best ET was 13.11 seconds at 103.5 mph. Probably could have achieved an ET in the 12's with this combo with some timing and jetting adjustment, but was fighting a weak battery all weekend. Just goes to show very low 13's are doable with bolt on parts.

John, that was the old combo that ran 13.80s-14.00s; it was at about 95 mph. Last summer we swapped in a livelier engine. .030 455, forged pistons, Stage 1 heads, TA 290/94H cam, Hughes GM20BPO converter, and upgraded to TA’s 2.5” exhaust with Walker 17748 long case mufflers. Only got two clean passes at BG in October but ran 13.13 and 13.12 at 101. Both this engine and the 13.80 mill were topped with a John Osborne built 800cfm qjet. I’m hoping with some test and tune I can drive it into the high 12s. (With the new cam it doesn’t go ‘wubwubwub’ anymore. More like ‘whumpathumpatathumpa’.)

When I first started racing.....25ish years ago, had a stk bottom end 455 out of big car, re refreshed at home, std bore and crank, factory cast pistons, lunati version of hemi killer cam, stage1 plus spring, converted stage1 heads that I sold to a member here the other year, some mild but well done port work by john z, sp1 850 holley then, 4.1 gears, tci 3000 stall, th400, think car and driver was 3900+ then. Went 12.0s like a printer. I made more money with that combo. Why did I ever want to go faster

Almost identical to my old 430, but mine was with 4000 stall and 3.73's at 3500lbs 11.72/114 was my best. Built 23 yrs. ago, sitting on a stand in the garage ready to go.

    72 Skylark
    76 455 - stock, but running good
    TA_286-08H cam
TA Roller rockers (I think 1.5)
    TA valve springs
Modified stage 1 heads off of a 10-sec race car (raised intake ports with matching SP1)

I think this is the engine currently in CJP69's GS400 convert now, although it was rebuilt due to spinning it a little much on the 2nd or 3rd pass.

Hey thanks, and no that was on an engine dyno - 400 through regular manifolds, 415 with Jims manifolds and 435 with headers. I didnt think anything of it because its really a pretty stock small cammed motor. I say it must have loosened up cause now it's running 106 in the quarter and thats generally recognized as 360 hp at the wheels (in a 4000 lb car). Depending on how you make the jump from RWHP to Flywheel HP, thats 440-450 hp at the crank. I've tweaked it a little (colder plugs, smaller crank pulley, etc..) but nothing significant. And I should probably clarify all that was with 68-69 1.55 rockers and Johnson lifters that wouldnt pull through 5500 (thanks Jim Weise , you were right)

Mine is a tough one as it’s been 1/8th mile running JR Street with my son. 462, not sure if compression, stage 1 heads, Holly HP950, TA SP-1, Poston 112 cam, Hooker Pro Comp Headers,3200 stall, built turbo 400, QP 9 inch with 3.70s, and running 275-60-15 drag radials. Letting the car shift itself, its best was a 8.5 in the 1/8th, with a race weight of 4600-4700 lbs IIRC. I have weights and sand bags to slow the car down for his class.
