heh, and the pictures saved me.
    no posi but 4.11 gears
    Richmond Pinion No. 80-8053-1

    Spec is as follows

    Ring and Pinion Ratio: 4.11:1
    Cover Bolts: 10
    Ring Gear Bolts: 10
    Pinion Spline Count: 25
    Carrier Series: 3
    Ring Gear Rotation: Standard
    Ring Gear Teeth: 37
    Pinion Gear Teeth: 9
Ring Gear Diameter (in): 8.200 in.
Pinion Shaft Diameter (in): 1.438 in

well, that's not right.... this is a 8.2 not a BOP 8.5... dang but at least 4.11... though with that said, this is a temporary axle now

someone has been in there, but why would you rebuild a peg-legger?

    bench of parts to install
    [IMG]

the steering box was where I left it, sitting above the installed one.... spent some time trying to find it... hidding in plain sight.

time to get some work done
    [IMG]

    and out
    [IMG]

    remove the bushings..

clean and get ready for paint
    [IMG]

    strip the yellow paint off
    [IMG]

hmmm.... not all wagon springs are created equal
    [IMG]

don't know what year these are for, but not this... and yes, I'll chop them down and reweld - these braces are pretty important
    [IMG]

    arms look good, though

this just fell out of my truck

3.30 gear, open diff.... as cheap as the one I bought for my first blogged skylark. 3.30 is much more reasonable for the 200r4....

IIRC the factory ratio is more likely a 3.36:1.

    Keep up the good work!

    thanks!
I'm quoting the seller, but now you're going make me math (not nice ;) ) 43/13 = 3.307692307.... dang seller, doesn't he understand how to round up? ;) it's 3.31s. Someone was in this rear diff (though why someone would spend the money to regear and not put some kind of limited slip is a good question, the seller didn't know either)

seriously though - the guy I bought this from does amazing work. He's a former hydroplane mechanic (and it turns out we have several mutual friends). He's building a 66 Chevelle that it's not ground-breaking but everything is perfect and everything is well thought out - and he's going to use it to run Pike's Peak.... he does his own engine building, metal work, fiberglass work, carbon fiber/honeycomb work... in a one-car garage (with a few outbuildings)... best way to describe him is he is the builder that makes the 'heros' look good.

Oh yeah, the 3.31 is the 12 bolt and the 3.36 is a 10 bolt ratio.

Stupid CRS memory! Sometimes it feels like I forgot more than I know.

heh, close counts in my book.

next question, 3.8 oil pans.... is there a rear sump (not center sump) pan for these? the motor is actually just a bit too far back - if it moves forward, the transmission fits in the tunnel - but not with the center sump.... I think I answered my own question, but a quick solution would be nice (rather then one that requires fabbing or refabbing the pan).

and in case anyone is curious - I am keeping this 100% Buick to the extent Buick made the part.... no Ford 9", no 700r4, 12 bolt, 200r4.... of course, that doesn't mean it won't have a megasquirt computer - but to the extent that it was built for a Buick, it'll be used.

So it seems I've not really mentioned my other Buicks. I have a 50 Sedanet that is a long, long term project that has a 455 now 430 (sleeved) twin turbo motor for it..... the avatar is it (it has moved a bit further along)
    and my other Buick

clearly a Buick, you can tell by the big grill :)

    more sweaty, dirty work
    take all the suspension out
    [IMG]
    safety third
    [IMG]

    new bits
    [IMG]
    motor is out, again
    [IMG]

wood screw holding the steering column down... nothing but the best safety practices
    [IMG]
and there it is out to be washed
    [IMG]
looks the same only has about 30 lbs less dirt
    [IMG]
it's the Ford hubcaps that makes it tow so well

time to make stuff you'll never see pretty
    [IMG]
and the fun of putting brakes together
    [IMG]
I think it had new slave cylinders... don't care, they're cheap
    [IMG]
it's like a puzzle with extra and missing pieces but no picture
    [IMG]
okay a picture of something similar
    [IMG]
two packages of stuff to get most of what I need.... missing the parking brake bar
    [IMG]
this has everything but the e-brake and it's for both sides
    [IMG]
since I have to order the bar
    back to installing

    Time to start hanging pieces
    didn't notice this
    [IMG]
    fixed
    [IMG]
    well hung
    [IMG]
paint so I could start on the front
    [IMG]
Buick... he's not a fan of fireworks, so he's attached in the shop

    rattle can rebuild
    [IMG]
bit of weight in the front.... yeah, the rear axle overbalanced it
    [IMG]
    sway bar installed
    [IMG]
    start of suspension work
    [IMG]
so there's only one, slight problem with these lower arms
    [IMG]
how does one lube those zerks when the suspension is together?

but the steering box was a direct bolt in
    [IMG]

cleaned and painted the steering arms too
    [IMG]

    thanks for watching

Very cool wagon. Same vinyl color and pattern as in my 64 Special down to the chrome foil strip on the door panel. Never seen that on another 64 Buick or any year for that matter. Your interior pictures also tells me the lighter blue knobs on the turn signal and shift lever were correct and original as is the darker blue on the dash. Now I know, thanks for posting.

    Feedback?

Looks like you're doing a great job, are you unsure of something?

If you would like an opinion on something all you have to do is ask, other than that from where I'm sitting, it looks like you and your little buddy have it handled.

I am enjoying the ride though so please keep posting your progress.

my big 'need help' right now.... a passenger quarter panel. I certainly have the ability to build a quarter from scratch... take me about 3 months of 'spare time' (which is when I work on this) (my goal is done by November)... in an effort not to do that, is a 4 door car similar in shape? 2 door? what I need is from the bend below the window down.... I bought lower pieces from a supplier in Canada. This isn't criticism.... what he does is needed and adequate, but at $400 plus another $200 in shipping and import dues..... I'll either build it myself of (hopefully) find a quarter. In that vein, there is a wagon in a wrecking yard in South Dakota (who also may have some parts I need for my 50), but again, long commute

A 4 door Skylark or Special the same year('64 and '65) should be identical to your 4 door station wagon below the window area I would imagine.

Converting a 2 door fender would probably be a bit more challenging cutting it to fit around the wheel well.

You can post in the parts wanted section here, I would imagine that 4 door cars get parted out a lot to be donors to restore 2 door cars so someone on v8 may have what you need?
