i got a gear vendors owerdrive for my 66 skylark gs, so im pulling the tailhousing off the t10 to install od unit. after i get the tailhousing off i notice the mid plate which holds the main shaft and rear bearing has separated 3/8 inch from case. doesnt seem to want to go back in. please tell me i dont have to take the whole thing out of car and apart to get back together. any help would be appreciated. thanks, johnny

I would think that installing an OD unit would involve replacing the entire main shaft, so, wouldn't you need to take the entire trans apart anyway? Wouldn't you want to freshen-up the trans while your at it? Does this OD unit just attach to the rear of the main shaft? If so, you will need to shorten the drive shaft.

You may have dropped an needle bearing from the input gear. It's not that bad to rebuild one of those.

mainshaft does not come out, just tailhousing, trans has only 500 miles on it ,rebuilt last year.

So it connects to the back of the main shaft which means you shorten your drive shaft. Something's got to give.

Anyway, still sounds like you dropped a needle bearing. In my younger days I could put a 2nd gear syncro in one of those transmissions in an hour, that's from pulling the car in to backing it out.

Before you dig in to it, you might try taking the side cover off (if there's room) and make sure a shifter fork isn't hung. You could even try to shift gears to see if it falls together.

    Just trying to help.
