how does an intake port become larger than a head port. Who does this, everyone knows this is a problem but yet he goes with it. must have been non ported heads and still got 470 hp with 9.1 comp. Well with my 10.6 comp that must be 550 hp. Bolt on 150 hp wow. just think, a cam no bigger than a 212 cam which is about it for a 9.1 motor can put out some serious power. just think this is usually a 340 hp with that cam and 9.1 comp. and now 470. Need to see that test with the D/P TA intake.

It says 390 hp to 470 hp which is only 80 more hp, but still very very nice!

Guys, sorry for the delay....I am going to go hang out with Gary (and Fred Catlin) again today at Zimmermans's speed shop in Greensburg Indiana to finish dynoing my 71 stock intake, stock manifold, 470. Something is wrong with our ignitor III rev limiter and had to wait on a new kit for today's tests.
I will take my laptop so we can answer all the questions on this thread.

Gary Herche is a LONG, LONG, LONG time GSCA member. Has been going to B.G. every year since early 80s. He has had a 72 GS drag car that he used to bring, now, he has retired from Cummins and is so busy building motors, he can't run his own stuff. Gary drove Fred's car for him for several years.
Me, I am just someone that converted to Buicks after watching Saturday morning TV where I saw John Chamberlin with his brown 70 Stage1 and have never looked back. Also, I hang out here on V8Buick

As mentioned, Gary has ~6 cars running NHRA, Stock Eliminator with his 350 combo. Earlier this month, in Gainsville, a 3600lb, J Auto, Buick 350 ran 11.48 @ 113.62.

Have all your questions posted today so Gary and I can give you the answers you are looking for.
Sorry for the Delay, But, I do know Gary, Fred and Zimmerman Brothers are super excited about the performance of this intake.
    Details will be posted, TODAY!!!
    Troy

Side Note: Fred is doing GREAT! He is preparing to move back into his house after the fire (and burglary) and his many health battles he has been fighting.

Ta port matched the intake before it shipped out... The heads are not allowed to be gasket matched as per rules. They are switching to a non port matched intake for the track...

It was explained to me by a guy that makes power with BBC using the factory "peanut" port heads because of no choice of intakes that match closer to that port a larger port aftermarket intake has to be used. What I read here that people believe is that with a larger intake manifold port than the head port that reversion would happen but that is just not the case unless it is a forced induction application. Air gets sucked into the cylinder so air is only moving through both the manifold port and head port as wide as the smallest point of both ports so that mismatch doesn't really matter. If it did then the 'peanut" port BBC heads wouldn't be able to make the power that they make with an aftermarket intake manifold.

So gasket matched or not shouldn't make much difference, if anything it may test lower?

Hp numbers from a ta dp vs the ta sp if that was tested is what i would like to see.

Yes, include the details like open or 4 hole spacers and thicknesses.

Does "stock" class racing allow spacers?

Ive wondered myself as my intake I got used from someone here, that used a hammer n screw driver to try and "port" the TA intake.
All I did was clean things up but the ports are bigger then the heads now.

I'm thinking that 350 eng. Gary is using for testing, is a long duration cam, possibly with all the legal mods allowed, except for the SP3. You wouldn't pull 470 ponies with a stocker.

We're looking for the substantial power increases trying both style intakes, hopefully with and without spacers, that any street guy can use!:TU:

Guys, Here are some answers to some of the questions.

I heard a similar statement as Sean. "TA really hit a home run for us Buick 350 guys!" But went on to say, he can't wait for the head testing opportunity......?????

To correct my earlier statement, These are NHRA Super Stock motors.
    BORE 3.830
    STROKE 3.863
    9:1 Compression
    1.880 Intake Valve
    1.550 Exhaust Valve
    CAM - Solid Roller
Custom Herche Grind .650 Lift IN & EX

Heads are NHRA Super Stock Ported that must use stock valve size, must use stock port volume @155cc

Yes, there were comparison runs on a Modified Chrysler cast intake, a TA DP and the new TA SP for the 350.
The TA DP was 15 HP better than the Modified Chrysler
The TA SP was 25 HP better than the TA DP (with the previously mentioned mismatch) These heads follow NHRA rules for a CC number that cannot be exceeded, so the cross-section of the port remains virtually stock.

Both a Holley and a Quadrajet were ran. Both worked equally well.

There were no spacers used for this testing, the plenum is adequate size for this engine application. Some others may need a 4-hole or open spacer depending on your combo.
Yes, Super Stock does allow use of spacers. In our case, we can't run a spacer cause the hood will not shut.

When TA gets their new heads, used with a 12.5:1 engine with enough cam, using Q15 VP fuel producing 525hp should be no issue with this TA SP manifold.

If you have a cam that is .450 lift or less, a .050 duration of .245 or less, the DP is still the better manifold. Any larger than this and the SP3 shows it has benefits.

If all goes as planned, there will be a Super Stock car running this engine at the NHRA points meet in Mid-April at Montgomery Motorsports Park, Alabama.

Here is a bit more about Gary:
He was a Buick guy, long ago! In 1965, he purchased a new GS with a 401 and a 4-speed. Bet he wishes he still had that car.
He has raced NHRA Stock Eliminator w/455 since 86.
In NHRA Stock and Super Stock competition, he has 6 Buick 350. Some for ~11+ years. These cars are Previous Record holders and currently are the Quickest and the Fastest 350 Buicks in the NHRA circuit.
For the last 10+ years, his son has been running a 70 Stage1 street/strip car that he drives up to 100 miles each way to a track and drive it home. He will consistently run 11.50s as a daily drove street/strip car.
As Mentioned, Gary has developed the NHRA approved rod for the 350 Buick that are the stock weight. They are virtually unbreakable in a naturally aspirated motor.
Gary has been very important to helping Fred Catlin and getting him back on a healthy track and helping him however he can. Those Buick guys really look out for each other. Great job Gary!!!

This is an exciting time in the Small Block Community. Gary has multiple build options for a 350 or a 455. I Highly recommend spending some time talking to Gary. PM me for his cell number.

    Interesting..

The qualifications for use and % gains are almost exactly the same as the Big Block.

I guess one should expect that.

For the 350, the heads are going to be where the big power is, the SP3 will be a nice compliment to it in many builds.

Exciting time for the 350 Buick motor, I knew I kept all those cores for a reason.:TU:
