Absolutely classic! Made my day. The front bump! I love it. Hey, I will back you up with my GS that has a lowly qjet and factory manifolds. Im willing to take a little drive around Bowling Green before the race too if he wants.
Hey Gary. Not sure what you mean by alternative fuel, but Gary Laughlin ran 9.40's at 3600 # plus. He was on a 9 " tire and tail pipes.Ive seen many heavy buicks run high 9's low 10's at 3800 plus lbs on a small tire through tailpipes. Not sure what you consider fast.Either way, i hope you can hit on something that will help all of us , and i wish you luck in your project. Tommy.
Absolutely, Mine is 12:1 comp, Crower crank, TA stg2 TE flowing 389cfm, twin 840cfms on a tunnel ram making 830+hp and 800ft/lbs and yes I drive it on the street. Infact as far as a tank will get me, and easily 38'C weather. It helps that I run E85, as the plate under the carbies condensates alot in high humidity. The car has been registered since Sept '14 and I have clocked up 1500 miles on it so far. Cheers
The Pistons were 4.350 Diamonds and the rods were Oliver Rods 6.800 long Big Block Chevy with a 2.100 crank pin.
Now, that is some good rods there! I talked with Mike at AM&P about running those rods with a light weight Winburg crank in a TA aluminium block with other goodies I mentioned to him and he said " That would be fine if you had a set of heads made to support those types of stuff but, you really don't need them because there isn't a set of production (aftermarket) heads that can be ported big enough to actually use them. Those parts go beyond 1300 hp" I agreed then. We did speak of destroking a big block buick.
Oh you talking about your boasted 70 GS? Hmm, go to Milan and ask for Joe Gorton, he'll be happy to show you his under carriage as he leaves you No , I didn't build that engine.
Derek, do you have any Buick or small block chevy (smc for short) that has lived beyond 8 years at 750 hp naturally aspirated and when nitrous is applied, 1100+ hp? I bet you haven't ! Ya, I took E-Bay trash and made it work! What are you jealous of what I have accomplished? Derek, that's why I'm going to Darin Morgans class for, to get ahead of people like you The Mondello school is just a nail in your coffin ! You right, I don't even have a car yet! But, when I do, I still won't be driven it! I just build engines to tick people off like you. oh by the way it was my mistake "vettr was suppose to be Corvette.
Derek, quiz question for you, Is Gene Fulton a engine builder or assembler? The answer will shock you...
Bquick, no, his new ride, its another old vette with a small block 427 with Dart Little Chief cylinders and Twin Turbo's He admitted his big block vette didn't do well on the street but this one was built by Mike Moran of Moran Racing Engines producing well beyond 2500 hp and drives like a normal car if you stay out of the throttle Rod has gone in the Sixes easily with this one. No more trailor queen he says ..
Dave, when I talked to Mike at AM&P he said its pretty easy to make 850 hp on a 528 without going nuts on a set of TA stage 2 TE's! He has done it several times but he said to make that power level and then some, get a TA Tomahawk block and have extra thick sleeves installed and go with a destroked 430 to say 422 or so and have the TA st 2 te's hogged out, you'll be surprised what you can get. I did. Mike is a very knowledgeable man, I wish he wasn't retiring ..
Tommy , the guys I hung around with back then are in the eights and that's the slow ones, the fast ones or in the low sevens to high sixes. through the mufflers still. I'm wanting to see a Buick be able to drive down the road and still rip off low single digit numbers, that's what I'm talking about. I look at a small block chevy and big block Buick and say why can't they make the same type of heads for the Buick? They have the same bad problem as Buick, the lifter bore placements but they have heads that smoke anything Buick can offer at the moment. Go look at a set of SB 2.0 or SB 2.2 heads! Those head design alone would wake the Buick and produce some very sick power. But nope, no one has attempted to make a set! Yes, only your wealthy can offord them but once made can be mass produced to help bring down the price.
Be careful where you go Dropping Gene's name, my old man has known Gene all his life and me as well, his shop is 20min from mine. But Gene is neither a builder or assembler he his a PIONEER in what he does his last SBC "small block chevy" here on earth anyway,...made over 900 and was intended to run in a nostalgia drag series we have down here but hiwas kicked out due to them rewriting the rules to do so. And please dont tell me you call and have happy chats with him because Gene doesn't chat with anyone. While Gene doesn't do as much has he used to he still oversees what goes on at every step and has forgot more than Any of us will know. All work.is done in house btw he has several CNC machines and guys to run them he makes what he needs
A small block Chevy is sbc for short NOT "smc". Building an ebay sbc engine is probably the cheapest and easiest engine to put together. Yes I have done a few of those, not as much HP though only 575 HP sbc N/A 383 with un-ported dart heads with a solid roller cam, it runs great on premium pump gas. With ported heads, more compression and a different cam sure it would make more HP but I wasn't building a dragstrip engine. That engine destroyed 3 powerglide transmissions so far, he's upgrading to a th350 to see if one of those will hold up. He was still able to get that caged 2 wheel drive 19" of front suspension travel and 24" of rear suspension travel Jeep Cherokee about 20 ft in the air at Silver lake sand dunes only using 1st gear!(because the trans was broke already!) I have another sbc "ebay" engine that's all ready to be assembled, a 434 for another off road sand/mud/hill vehicle. Dirt cheap to build compared to other brands and oh so easy to make power. This build will eventually be 700+ HP when the heads, intake, cam and valve train get upgraded. But in the mean time it will have stump pulling torque with Vortec 350 heads and a flat tappet hyd. Comp. cams Magnum 294 I think it is that I have used with the lifters in order sitting on the self and a ebay duel plane air gap imitation intake. The guy I'm building it for spent the $$ on the low end so it can be upgraded later. So assembling "smc" sbc ebay engines is by no means an impressive feat, get over yourself! Who do you think I am that I would be "jealous" of anyone's accomplishments? My post to you was because you attacked JW, you seem to be jealous of his accomplishments. Why is the Mondello school "just a nail in my coffin"? Again who do you think I am? I'm not no big time drag racer by any means and could care less about cars that are faster than 11.50 that start needing roll cages. If some wants to go faster than that I'm more than happy to get an engine together to make that happen though. And why do you think you need to go to Darin Morgan's class to "get ahead of people like me"? If you want to better yourself by getting educated more power to you. I only wish people the best, I don't go around name dropping and attacking people like JW's abilities. And Gary, assemble all the engines you want, I promise you that you won't "tick me off" by doing so, unless I have to fix one or more of them. And that name drop post calling me out, I have absolutely zero clue who that guy is and don't really care. I don't waste my time calling a bunch of people for advice, I usually can figure out what I need to do on my own. GL Derek
Why are you speaking of how many years an engine stayed alive that you build? You are starting to sound like those Chevy guys at my local track, that are talking about the same thing as you. My BBC is 9 years old has never been opened up, bla bla still runs etc. My answer to them was: Your BBC makes 20-25 runs tops each year, its never run on the street and its always trailered...And you have the nerve to compare it to my combo thats driven on the street, and makes between the 50-70 runs each race season at least? So the question is how much is it used, how many runs did it make etc etc, what maintaince did it need etc. Thats the real question here, not the "he has that engine for 8 years now and its still alive" quote.
The average time at the track? Hmmm, lets see here? Friday's from about noon till dark and Saturday's well lets say every single No ET in Michigan! For about average of about 20 passes per weekend and about two to three street races a night after the drag strip seen. From the time the drag strips open to the first snow fall, that's all You only do 50 passes a year without a rebuild, not bad at all! I build my engine with over kill parts so they last longer and if they want to up grade there top half to go faster they can with ease. yes, I get stupid on my engine builds but, I like them to last not rebuild every season. The guys I did the engines for could not offord a Buick build even if they wanted too !
When did Gene. start doing his own stuff? Because hot rod had him as a engine builder like my besides doing his own heads! They said he farmed out all his machining... but again that was a long time ago.... I know gene does wonderful head porting because reher-Morrison still uses his heads on large cubic engines.
Derek, go check out the 440 stroker kit! But I think its for a Dart block, not sure though. For sand/hill/and mud you should of went with the 421 -422 sbc. You get the horsepower and torque. The 434 requires aton of airflow to make good. Like AFR's 235's to 245's! A friend of mines 421 with AFR 235's cnc'ed with a soild roller cam and 12.1:1 comp. AFR said it should make over 600 ft. of torque and 780+ hp. The bottom rotating assembly is eagle with je forged pistons. Pretty cheap compared toany buick build...
