I have just received my HP BOOK. " Engine Airflow " ,if anyone wants to know what it takes to design a cylinder head or just simply get the best out of your porting job! I advice getting this book and read it. The information will make your head spin. It does have all the top cylinder head designers and porters in there and they all have good advice. Amazon. has them pretty cheap in the used book section ;)

Just by thumbing through the "Engine airflow" book you find somethings pros do that many don't do.... A lot of secrets are revaled in. this book. Like I said almost all the top cylinder head designers and porters are in there and the stuff is beyond what most people can imagine...

Mr. Gruther, im thinking by the way you worded that sentence about secrets revealed, your having trouble convincing yourself there are actually secrets being revealed. It may be your excitement over the quality information you've gained from that book, has you thinking secrets have been revealed. You may have given yourself a knowledge high. So don't bogart man, copy and past that book so we can all get a knowledge high too!

I'm back to beat this horse to death. [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] . Just think now that is one book. and that's not even half of it.

Here is the other two books now.[IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG]. Some of the imagies might be double sorry. But you get the pictures. There is so much information just in this books that it is hard to take in if you read them back to back. [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] , [IMG][/IMG] . Go reading you all.. Now think about this, this is not half of whats in the books. I have studied David Vizards book " How to port and flow test cylinder heads" and was blowin away on the information anyone can learn for just a few bucks. that book cost $13.75 and you cant get that knowledge by most Pros. The engine air flow book is very hard to grip but Im up for the challenge and the Pros do talk in there. That book is also on Amazon.com cheap.

I'm posting this sample pages to let people know there is a ton load of work to develop a cylinder head not to poke fun of please.

Anyone that hasn't had there heads wet flow tested! You should. There is things that a flow bench can not show and it could cost you power! Example a simple short side mistake on the intake side that shows improvement but on a wet flow it can hinder to much wetting on the spark plug or to much on the cylinder wall.

I have the Vizzard book. Yrs from now Mike T might put out a book on trials and tribulations of the Buick Head. I like the TA alternative. I like how the information hits you like a brick. I read up a bunch of stuff ported my first set of heads, ran them . Felt good. Found that Vizzard book and the wet flow section and WTF. So I did another set , using some of the new info gained from Viz book. Night and day differance. I bet some aluminum TA heads out of the box will out do all my iron head efforts. I hope the heads will come with a guide on whare to blend and shape , because after reading the wet flow chapters i would be concerned i might screw things up.

Anson You have to walk before you can run, before I would start worrying about wet flow I would start with either finding a head porter with a bench that you can rent or buy a used one because without out it none of this will do you much good. Start with understanding the importance of repeat-ability which is understanding the tools you are using, then apply what you have read and verify it for your self. Things like valve jobs and the approach and blending to them, cutter to un shroud in the combustion chamber is another critical area where you need to spend a lot of time understanding what works and what doesn't. A good computer program will also come in very useful to verify what you are doing, the one I have can get over whelming, but it is a real important tool to have in your tool box. I will quote part of what one of my mentors posted into response to a post I made on another website when I cut and pasted some comments that were made here on V8buick on my cylinder head thread that I had going. "talks very clearly about making
ports or valves too big, gaining CFM but loosing power" second quote was "This is very rarely JUST about the cfm number"

Not trying to be cocky here but, if I were to ever do another set of cylinder heads, you bet I will follow David Vizards advise over anyone else. There is luckly five people in cylinder head and engine testing that has 500,000 hrs of dyno time and other testing. Yes he has done bbb heads and v6 heads too. David is very informational, esecially when you write to him personally. Yes, I plan on getting a flow bench with all the bells and whistles just do testing my self, that's why I'm studing before I go to school for this.. I want to help develop a stock looking bbb cylinder head that will out flow anything you ever seen. That is my goal. Buick lovers need better heads then of now, I'm welling to do anything to do that..

Without wet flow you will never know if you port is doing its job right once it enters the cylinder. without seeing the luminated wet flow you will not know if you are wetting the cylinder wall to much, or Spark plug and so on. Wet flow does have a big impact to knowing certain things but , it won't tell you which way to go from there. That's the down side of it..

you bet stage one your right about the unshrouding, I did a little bit of that and back cut the valves 30 deg . I also did not use hardened seats on the exaughst. Those three things may have been the biggest improvements . I also know that the second set i did not remove as much metal in some areas and did in other areas. After reading about wet flow a little and how a ledge or bump in the intake path in, the bowl or just before the bowl can shear some of the bigger droplets for better mixture , i noticed the stage 2 TA and the factory stage 2 heads had incorperated some of that into the heads. Daunting and overwhelming indeed. I most defenitly spent a ton of more time and patience with repeat-ability, early style inside outside micrometers , and believe it or not using a mirror helps a ton as it flips the image over , as iron heads get heavy after a while.

I really like all these porting threads. I wish Buickstage1 thread was still on here. I like reading and looking at the work. For you guys that are just starting out it should be mandatory to work on a nailhead for starters. :puzzled: Once you can get some results from that you will know how good you have it with the TA heads that are available. This threads about had it, waiting for the next one :TU:
