Per title I am looking for suggestions on a good vehicle to use to pull my buick and in some cases the parts cars for my buick. My Dakota just ain't cutting it for longer hauls even with the 318 in it.

I picked up a diesel excursion for my wife..
Hauls my buick and big trailer very well.. bout 8klbs
2wd 7.3 excursions can be had for about 6k, get 22mpg on the highway and haul a lot with some minor mods brakes, sway bar, air bags etc...

I tow with a 2005 Silverado 2500HD 4X4, 6L auto with Posi rear. Plenty of power to do the job. And you can own it if you want it. I've had it for about 4-5 years and I like it a lot, but I'm usually willing to sell my stuff.

I'd wager that the Dakota doesn't weight that much more than your Buick! (what about 4k lbs?)

I'd go diesel if you can, the 5.9L Cummings in older Dodges (if you are brand loyal) are nice, even the 360/5.9L gas engine is a nice bump over than the 318/5.2L (then there's always the V-10 :Brow:............).

A freind of mine had an extended cab '97 Dodge 4x4 with the 5.9L gas engine and he'd have no problem hauling a Dodge WC-52 (about 6k lbs) on one of those featherlight aluminum trailers with no problem (terrible gas milage of course, like the 9-10 range).

Is this a flat tow or up over large hills? if it is a flat tow then get a 2010-2013 5.3 Liter with the 6L80E 6 speed trans... Or if there are large hills find a diesel truck.

I have a diesel 2012 2500 GMC that gets the job done no problem. I previously had an Avalanche 2500 with an 8.1 liter that acted as if it wasn't towing a car in an enclosed trailer. 4l80e I the Av, Allison in the diesel. Diesel gets a few more MPG, but an 8.1 liter GM can be had at a lesser price.

Same story with my 07 duramax. If I was to tow my buick I would get a sportwagon!

Use a buick to pull a buick? Is that not the same situation I am in now.

I'm sorry I thought you said you were using a Dakota:Do No: I was thinkin a sport wagon or estate wagon for the hauling of cars and parts.

I towed my Sportwagon home with my 1995 Suburban 4x4 350 auto w/4" lift. had no problems. even with worn tires and brakes. I did have to put it in 4wd once I got closer to home only because of the snow. Also hauled my 95 Explorer home once with it.

While I have yet to tow anything substantial I think my 04 Denali XL would do quite well. 6.0 346hp 4l60 AWD. I did tow my Harley to FL and back(1800 mi one way.) with it didn't even know it was back there. plus the denali has all the luxury items.

My brother in law has an '03 Denali Yukon with the 6.0, but boy does that haul @$$ for a heavy SUV, compared to the 5.3L in the In-laws '05 Tahoe.

The 2007 model year 5.9L has the most "improvements". In other words the least amount of issues. I have a 2006 MegaCab and know a little bit what I'm talking about.
