That would make sense and I somewhat figured it was a motor that fit the rule book for that class.

My motor was literally pulled from a 1971 Station Wagon and freshened with new bearings, new gaskets and a small cam which I purchased from Greg Gessler. Other than that ALL the factory parts & pcs including the stock bore 1971 Pistons and non stage 1 heads are all being re-used. I simply didn't have 10 - 12k laying around for a ported - high compression stock appearing motor so we threw this motor together to finally get the car on the road and to the track. Now my plan is to have some fun with it and see what we can accomplish with a truly stock motor until the money is there to throw at my other motor. It will run 12's - just not sure how far into the 12's we can get but I'm up for the challenge!

11's is still pretty impressive even for a "Pure Stock Legal" motor!

Jeremy McNicol We had a good time

Dave has not went 11's in pure stock trim. 12.50's yes. Sparty has two different setups. Pure Stock and GS Nats.
Last year at Bowling Green he ran 11.90's. With slicks, 4.10 gears and the ported heads/ big cam. Dave would be happy to help and is a great guy. Dave has helped me get my personal best of 12.81. My Pure Stock car is 3,900 with driver

    Thanks Korrie.
Looks like 12's are pretty obtainable with a "Pure Stock" motor. Eventually I plan on upgrading to 1970 (compression) and Stage 1 (Heads) minus the port work so I'm excited to see what kind of ET's we can obtain. I believe 12's are already in the car now with the 1971 Station Wagon Motor. Maybe we can nip at the 11's with the 1970 Stage 1 specs and motor upgrades per the Pure Stock Rule book.

    Some parts after "surgery":

Stock Radio - 1 Pound (Still works!) Just kidding :pp

Wiper Motor prior to being detailed: (2 Pounds)

Battery for Stock Location: (3.38 Pounds)

    .

We're currently working on some Bucket Seats. Top Half is done and came in under 5 pounds prior to installing seat cover. (Stock upper "bare" Seat Back is almost 15 Pounds) Working on the Bottom half now. I'll post more info and photos once they're done. These will look totally stock when done!

It's this kind of stuff that has made this project so much fun to build. I would say this car is about 95% Stock Appearing and will weigh around 3,100 pounds once I incorporate all my "tricks". (3,000 pounds if I ever install TA Heads and a B4B Intake)

I just need Jim's (Rodgers) Motor!

The 11.90's I've run were with a stock appearing engine. Stock bore, 11:1 CR, ported heads & manifolds. The cam is 233-248 dur @ .050 with low lift .450. I'm not taking full advantage of the heads with this cam but it was sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Weight of the car is 3600 + -.

Those are some pretty impressive ET's especially considering the weight of your car!

As I've mentioned we're working on some stock appearing Bucket Seats to try and save some more weight off the car.

The Factory Bucket Seats weigh around 55 Pounds EACH.

Here's a sneak peak of the seats we've built on the scale. 11 LBs !

What you're looking at is the Base and the Backside framework with factory covers looped over just to weigh them. NO foam is in place yet or the actual mounting brackets. (Which will be Aluminum also)
I'll post more pictures once they're done but they should pretty much resemble a factory bucket seat!

So with all that being said I believe these seats will come in under 20 pounds easily. The Drivers Seat will probably weigh a tad more than the Passenger Seat as we'll probably add in some extra gusseting for strength.

Another 70 + Pounds off this car!!

After the seat project I have one other item to finish which will take another 50 Lbs off the car so when it's all said and done it should be UNDER 3,100 pounds (w/o driver)

If I ever install TA Heads and a B4B we'll be in the 3,000 Lb area.

    Funnest Buick I've ever built!!

Here's another shot of the Seat (Top/Backside)

Again, no foam has been installed yet. It does have the factory Headrest mounts so all that will look factory. New Chrome trim will be installed on the Plastic Pcs as well.

More Pictures to come. Not sure how long the Upholstery Shop will take, they just had an employee pass away this week. I may try and install the foam myself - at least on the top. The bottom piece will need a bit more "experience" to finish.

Thanks Jim. It would be fun to team up and build one of these cars together! I know I sound like a broken record but your motor in this car would have a few guys wondering!! Might even shake up a Hemi or two Lol

    It's been alot of fun.

    Glad to hear this! :TU:

That was one sad day for me because it sounded like you were done for good. It always inspires me when no matter how many times we fall, we get back up and continue on...

Best of luck Todd and Jim! :beers2:

    Update: (9-10-2012)

Attended another Musclecar shootout this Sunday at Rock Falls Raceway.

The weather was a bit better than the 1st time out with the car and I'm happy to report the car is now in the 12's!
My best run ended up being a 12.91 @ 102 MPH. Best 60 ft also came on this run which was a 1.80.

I know I sound like a broken record but to recap this is with a 1971 Station Wagon motor that made 380 HP and 460 TQ. This is std heads, NO port work, NO compression (Factory 1971 Pistons still in use) and a factory QJ. The only aftermarket item in this motor is a small cam. To run 12's with only 380 HP is a testament to the weight savings we achieved with this build up! (The 60 foot times seem pretty decent for the lack of HP also!) Overall it was a great day. My main goal was to run some 12's which I was able to do during time trials. The actual racing started at 1:30 and the car worked PERFECT during the eliminations! When all the smoke cleared thee old Buford (Only 1 there) cleaned house! I hadn't raced in 8 years (Since owning my Silver 70 GS) so to actually win the race was and run some 12's made my weekend!

There is one more Musclecar Shootout at the end of the month. I'm hoping for some colder air and maybe improve on that E.T. a bit more.

Here's a shot of the car taken last week with my "Sleeper" wheels:

I'm hoping over the Winter Months to bring the motor up to Stage 1 Specs and possibly some port work.

    Update: October 1st (2012)

Attended the last Musclecar Shootout of the year at our Local Track (Rock Falls Raceway)

Ran a new best of 12.72 @ 102.91 MPH. New best 60 ft time also 1.73

No changes, still running the stock 380 HP motor. I did unhook the kickdown cable which allowed me to shift exactly where I wanted to and I believe that made a big difference. (could only muster 12.90's prior to)

We did not get the cold crisp air like we were hoping for so I believe the car is capable of a 12.60 run or maybe even a 12.50 run! (which is WAY faster than I felt the car would go with the baseline motor) I'm confident with portwork, compression, bigger cam and all the correct cast iron parts in place the car will easily run 11's. High 10's will still be a possibility but that will be tough - especially since I plan to run pump gas as this is a street car as well.

Fun - Fun car though! 60 foots are awesome for the lack of power!

Won the Race also so that's 2 for 2 this year for the underdog Buick!!

What tires do you have on there?
Also, what stall is your converter?

    Rear Tires are 275/60 x 15 M/T Drag Radials

Converter is a Hughes GM30 (About 2,800 Stall)

Most of the specs to this build up are on page 4 of my website > http://www.diecastmusclecars.com/1970stage1pg4.htm

    Thanks for looking,
