When I began to search for information on 1964 small block 4 speed cars I found out how hard it was to not only find parts but even identify what is correct. There is much more information on the later cars. I am by no means an expert and credit most of what I have come to know to Brian Stone on this board. I hope this thread can become a sticky for future reference. If you have information on 1964 four speed cars feel free to add to this. Many of the same parts are used on the 1965 and 1966 small block 4 speed cars as well. To follow will be pictures and descriptions of the items that are unique to the cars.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Correct transmission is a Borg Warner T-10 cast iron case with casting T-10 1B. on passenger side. Drain plug is low on passenger side. Aluminum tail housing with casting # T-10D-7. 27 spline output shaft, 10 spline input shaft with no rings. ( 3 rings used on 65 GS Trans has different ratios).
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Blue paint dot noted on tailhousing above speedometer cable input. Yellow slash of paint on bottom of trans. case close to tail housing. Aluminum side cover. Note stamped numbers on machined surface by the side cover. Vin stamp on top of mounting flange at bellhousing end.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Correct aluminum bellhousing. Note close up of casting number by clutch fork opening. I have seen other bellhousings that are designed to fit B.O.P. cars that have a starter mount on both sides. I can not confirm but I have been told they will fit but did not orginally come in these cars.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Orginal boot and ring that mounts on the firewall. Rod from clutch pedal to z-bar passes through. The letter C is stamped in the steel ring. The boot has RU in raised letters between mounting rib and three other ribs
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Hump that is screwed to the transmission tunnel. Some of the orginal tar like sealent is visable in bottom view. Bottom side had black paint.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Clutch and brake pedal set. Both pedals have the letter M in a circle stamped on the side. I have two sets and have found this on both. Clutch pedal is part number 1363523 correct for 64-66. The rubber bumper that the pedal rests against when the pedal is fully released is part number 1361714 for 64-66
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Correct 4 speed shifters were made by Hurst. GM part number 1362411 for 1964. The handle does not unbolt like the latter ones. The shifter is the flat style and chrome plated with no name or logo. The knobs are round solid black with no shift pattern part number 1358778. The shifter knob and the shift handle end are 3/8" fine thread. The side of the shifter housing will be stamped Hurst Competion Plus Patent Pending. The shifter rods are not threaded.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Rod from pedal to Z-bar. Part number 1363433 on 64-66. E style clip used to retain the rod on the pedal end part number 1351769 on 64-65 and 3749084 on 66. Z-bar end is retained with a key type retainer part number 1351769 on all 64-66 and a nylon washer.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread One thing I am not clear on is the Z-bar or bellcrank. This is the part that everything rotates off of. It mounts between the frame and the block. The early 64 cars had what I call a three piece design. I have two of the three parts and each end had a rubber boot. The second picture is from the service manuel with the missing items highlighted. The piece I have has 1363411 cast into the middle of the arm on the side that would face the engine. The opposite side has two diamond shaped symbols and TH.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread The second type of Z-bar is a one piece design. I am unclear if this was redesigned as a replacement part, came on later 64 cars or 65 cars. The following pictures are a NOS one I aquired.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Four speed cars that came with the 300 cid 355 Wildcat (355 ft lbs of torque 250 Horse Power Pack) came equiped with a Rochester 4 jet carb #7024045 . Automatic cars have #7024044 The drive shaft in four speed cars is a one piece solid shaft. The end will come to a point between the yoke. The automatic car drive shaft is like a tube inside a tube dampened in between. I will try to get a picture showing the automatic vs. the four speed as this is hard to describe. If the car was equipped with back up lights (optional in 64) the front light harness has two addtional wires. A back up switch is mounted off of the transmission. If anyone has pictures of the switch and mounting please post. The dash harness is the same although the wires used for netural saftey on an automatic car are jumpered. The rear axle ratio is most often 3.23 The steering column came in std or tilt versions unqiue to the four speed. If anyone has production number information or any other information please post up. (Update Post #35 in this thread has the production figures) How many board members have one? Has anyone seen a Special with a 300/355 4 speed ? I have seen ads but all four speed cars I have seen are Skylarks.
Re: 1964 Four Speed Information Thread Mark,I have a 65 drop top 4-speed car.Pretty much a parts car but most of the 4-speed stuff is there.
Re: 1964/65 Four Speed Information Thread Thanks for the reply Tom, I know the last few times we talked you were undecided as to what to do to with the car. If you decide to part it out let me know about the 4 speed parts. I hope some more will chime in.
