Cool Anyone running E85 in there race car ?

I'm seriously thinking of converting to E85 just because of the price of race fuel and high test (pump gas) Is anyone else doing the same ??

I know a couple people that do. And the ones that convert seem to be big fans of it. Run high compression, drive around on regular gas for fuel mileage (and availabilty) and then pour in the E-85 for the track. Loose stall converters keep detonation at bay on regular gas and easy street driving. Running E-85 on a lower compression engine might just be a waste of time due to the lower energy content of E-85. Have to take advantage of the high octane rating with compression to make it a good fuel.

The biggest thing I hear that sucks about E-85 is the mix batches can vary wildly between tankfuls. The mixing I guess isn't regulated or done well So the target AFR changes with each tank, based on the actual percentage of ethanol in the fuel. On Drag Week, some guys carried enough E-85 with them on a trailer such that their fuel was consistent the whole week. Other's will watch the AFR gauge after they fill up and scale their fuel map at idle until it matches what they want to see. Ethanol content sensors are becoming more available, but I don't know anyone outside the OEM's that use them. I would think it a major headache managing these changes with a carburetor. At least a high Ethanol fuel has a good tolerance to running on the rich side with a less detrimental effect on horsepower than when running gasoline rich.

We do energy trading here, and the scuttlebutt is that they vary the makeup of E-85 seasonally to deal with changes in fuel requirements from summer to winter, much like they do with diesel. Each fuel distributor has minimum content guidelines they adhere to for various times of the year to help meet emissions standards while keeping costs down as well.

It would probably be consistent at a given station at a given time of year, year to year, but from summer to winter or from one station to another, the composition would probably be different.

Done a lot of reading on the e85. You can buy a tester and test right at the pump to see how the blend is. They end up putting more gas in when the weather gets cold so you have to watch out for that.
Another good option is buying e98 by the drum and cutting it yourself w gas. Still ends up cheaper than race gas by far.

What do you have to change for the set up? Are you meaning a new tune with cam change and compression? Or just a fuel system change?

I just changed carb but I had a large enough fuel system, you could change cam for best performance, typically e-85 likes wider lobe centers
