Default front suspension noise on 06 Lucerne

My wifes 06 Lucerne (Northstar) has a sound coming from the front suspension like a spring moving around when you turn a corner or hit a slight bump in the road. It has 76K on it and has been back to the dealer twice before the warranty ran out. they said they couldn't find anything wrong, but they replaced one strut and wear plate under warranty, it did not stop the noise. Short of replacing both struts and wear plates, what else could cause this. Please help, it is driving my wife crazy. Other than this, it is a great car.

common front end noises on these cars are often the sway bar bushings and the link pins.

Sway bar links are a common problem on everything these days it seems, they don't look bad but move just enough to knock or squeak.

I had an exact issue you are having on my 01 Caravan several years ago. We replaced everything, until finally I did a bit more research, and found the problem to be the front sway bar bushings. So, in the end, it ended up being a couple of $8.00 parts. Changed the bushings, and the noise went away. (For a few years, at least). Turns out, they don't last long, and you have to change them every 2-3 years. I'll bet it's the same issue in your car.

Steering intermediate shaft knock is very common and can feel like a suspension component is worn out.

This is common on the Lacrosse/Impala, I would venture to say the DTS and Lucerne have a similar issue.

thanks, I haven't had time to check sway bar bushings but will do so tomorrow. I do know if you reach into the fender above the tire and have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth, you can feel the spring popping around in the pocket. Is there a spring rubber that is supposed to insulate the spring from the pocket?

Still no luck with this noise. Is there any way to lube the place where the springs rub in the pockets?

No way! The annoyance of the spring noise I can put up with. This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. It loves to run 80 on the highway and gets 23-25 mpg doing it.

Check your torque strut mount, it has a rubber bushing that wears out, I have a 07 charger with only 27,000 miles on it, and seems like it had the same noise when you hit a bump, like your describing. I changed mine yesterday, and noise gone, I know it's a different car, but I saw a picture of the one for yours, and they look very similar. The dealer replaced the right strut and bearing plate under warranty, since then no parts have been replaced because I can't find any worn or bad parts to replace. The struts are good, no front end wear or poor handling. Just the irritating noise.

drock - I will check to see if my CXL has this item. It appears to be CXS only.

read post # 3 and 5 on this thread. your left front mount and bearing plate can also be making this noise. if you can't change these parts take your car to a reputable shop.

A common source of noise for a lot of vehicles these days are the front strut dust boots. Some models the dealers are told to use caliper grease (silicone grease) to quiet the boots down. A lot of OE's do this...
