In the comments someone says that it has been proven to be a fake. Don't know which story is right but if it is the Buddy Holly car it is a heck of a find!

Bill Clements of Chevycraft in Lubbock is the most genuine example of human garbage on earth. If he told me it was a sunny day I would have to look up to verify it for myself.

I hear ya..he was selling vin tags, trim tags years ago..and all kinds of "documented" rare cars.....If ya remeber he had the only aluminum head LS6 70 Chevelle conv in a car mag years ago, and they proved he forged the documents and the build sheet...i didnt know this was his deal, or i wouldnt have posted it...I went back and saw it again..i missed the fact that bill had it...i was so wrapped up in the story i didnt get the facts..i just didnt put it together....

There was an article about ten years ago in Car Craft about someone having Buddy's Impala. Said they found it sitting behind a body shop in TX, Weird it looks like the same car.

I wondered what ever became of him. I figured someone must have killed him by now and put him wherever they hid Jimmy Hoffa. If Chevrolet ever digs up their old records and all those LS6 owners find out they have a 307 Malibu, there won't be a hiding place safe enough for him in the world.

If that truly is Buddy Holly's Impala, my opinion is that it should be restored. That's just too cool to let sit there in this clown's yard rotting away.

I can only imagine what he wants for the car if it's lineage is true and correct.

It's just been pulled from B-J due to them not being able to exactly determine it's 'provenance', i.e. the Buddy Holly link.

Probably as authentic as all the bullet riddled '34 Fords passed off as the Bonnie & Clyde death car.

I find it suspicious that a car that was essentially new and most likely still in his name at the time of his death would end up as a pile of rags in a junkyard.

Yeah - my first inclination was that it was probably the Big Bopper's Impala ;-)))
Being retired, I dutifully drive a few miles to McDonald's to sit and read the paper over coffee, while watching commienewsnetwork (aka cnn). Noticed one day last summer the window glass place across the street had a faded Pink (Mary Kay Mobile ?) 58 Cadillac sitting there - no sign in it. There were another half a dozen cars on the lot they share with the transmission shop next door (wouldn't buy one of those oatmeal cookers). They all had for sale signs, except for the Caddy.
So being a curious person, I drove over there as I was leaving McD's. The manager said the owner was in Florida - had hand-carried the 4bbl carb from the Caddy to a friends rebuild shop. He also owned the tranny shop along with the glass shop. I brazenly asked if the Caddy was for sale and he says - "YES" ! I had peeked inside and all the leather seat seams were separated with foam popping out, just a little, headliner shot etc. The manager asked if I would be interested - told him I might if it were cheep enough. So he tosses out $24,500.
Told him I already had a Buick and didn't want a PIG Caddillac, especially in a recession; laughed and wheeled on my heel, strolled out the door. If it was a good interior with a new headliner - it might qualify for $12,000. The thing DID have every single piece of chrome - some of the chrome and stainless was lightly tarnished, probably rub-out-able ? It WAS a two door coupe - in very solid NO RUST shape (inside them rocker panels or around the wheel wells might have had a few little paint bubbles).
So if anyone wants Buddy Holly's 58 Cadillac, I got it for sale for ONLY $250,000 ;-)))
Watch for me on Mecum. . .
Provenance is my donkey's last name !

I can't help it, but this whole thing just begs another question...... If Buddy Holly did, in fact, have a `58 Impala and this one isn't that car, and I have no doubts that it isn't, then where is the real one? Seems like with all the press this story has received that every gold digger in the country would be hunting Coral `58 Impalas

Sounds like "Peggy Sue" is also trying to cash in if you read the article.

"With doubts lingering about its authenticity, the Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. is refusing to auction a 1958 Chevrolet Impala
the seller said was purchased new by the late rock and roll music legend Buddy Holly.

The coral-colored Chevy was a featured car at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction next week in Scottsdale.

"We still don't feel comfortable with the car," Barrett-Jackson President Steve Davis said Tuesday after checking the classic car's documentation. "We're not going to run the car across the auction block. It's a painful decision I have to make."

Davis said a 2001 magazine article he became aware of raised questions about the car's authenticity that were unresolved.

Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1959, reportedly had his record producer buy the Impala at a dealership in Clovis, N.M., and later gave it to his father.

The car was restored in Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas, in 1997. The seller is Bill Clement.

The Chevy was signed on the fender skirt by Peggy Sue Gueron, who was the subject of Holly's hit song "Peggy Sue."

She was to appear at the auction with the Impala and to sign her book, "Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?"

Now am I the only one who never once thought "wonder what happened to Peggy Sue?"

I would bet that someone close to Buddy Holly, who didn't think of the car as a piece of history ended up selling it as an old used car or it sat and turned to trash and got crushed.
Not THAT long ago 58's weren't thought of as a good car to build and we probably lost a lot of them that would get fair money today.
He probably had more cars and this was "just an old Chevy". Who knows though. I remember a Howard Hughes car that had been locked away in storage and forgotten turning up a few years back. I think it went at the B.J. auction for good money.
