Default Locate Your Old Car by Its VIN

I saw several members wanting to do this type of central database search to locate an old car by its VIN so I did a little research for some services. At one time States sold their DMV databases although many or most no longer do that. Some of those DMV databases are still out there.

Looks like I'm out of luck in Georgia with a pre 17 digit VIN. We've been trying to find the original sale location and owner for my 68 GS400. The second owner bought it in Atlanta on Jan 13, 1984 with 66,600 miles. (Think about that: the first owner had it for 18 years and only drove 3700 miles a year. I do that in a summer now, cruisin! )

    Hi John,

Same problem here. I know from my 1969 GS400 convertible's first North Carolina title that it left Georgia in 1973. I'm fairly certain it was sold new in Toccoa, GA and then traded back into the same dealership (now Hayes Buick), but I have no actual documentation. When I had a '70 GSX back in 1989, I walked into a local DMV office in Hapeville and they copied all the titles off of microfish for something like a buck a piece. What did they do with all that info? They had it at one time, that's for certain.

Brian --Often they store the data on an old tape in an old format that is not supported today. You would have to get to their oldest tech person to know the real answer.

I just wish I had the VIN of my 70 Stage 1 70 GTO, and my 75 Pacecar. I would love to find those.
Is the service like a carfax and can tell me some history of my wagon.

usually, if a vin# has not been registered for 10 or more years, the history is purged.

I wish there was a way to find the mileage records of older vehicles like ours, I still question whether I have 37000 miles or 137000 miles

Figures Mass is exempt. I paid Mass $50 to trace my VIN and all they gave me was who I bought it from. They even blocked out his address??

So, I guess a search is hopeless for those of us with 1966 model cars?

I believe some of the older data base services have those 66 model on CD. They are not up to date but they may provide a lead.
