Hey Greg.I'm also from Oklahoma originally.Just moved up here a few years ago from Enid.Man I miss the warmer weather! As far as the Carter carbs, I have an Edelbrock #1406 600cfm on my Buick 350 and though it's a little small for it the throttle response is great and it holds a tune like you wouldn't believe. From what I understand, the Edelbrocks are identical to the Carters except for how the metering rods are #'d maybe.Otherwise I think they are the same. And you will not find an easier carb to work on or tune.Hope this helps a little and if anyone knows for sure about the rods , please feel free to correct me. :TU: Jeff B.

Carters make for the best carbs on a car you want to drive on a regular basis. Not big performance but reliable streetability.

  4. My 68 has a newer Carter AFB Competition Series 625cfm carb, #9635, with electric choke. It's great around town, with good idle qualities and low speed throttle response. The owner about 8 yrs ago couldn't get the Qjet to work well, so he bought the new Carter and an adapter plate, and it runs great. Fuel inlet is on the back right side of course. I like it, but wouldn't mind a bigger carb. I do get some bog at times when I mash the pedal, but not typically.

I've also got an Edelbrock #1406. Good dependable carb. I like the electric choke-be sure it gets a good 12v source. You will need to run an adapter plate, there's plenty of room under the hood for that.

    Carter Carb

I have a 500cfm Carter AFB with electric choke on my '64 Skylark 300. Works great. I started out with an NOS 4GC, but after the cam and header change, it just couldn't provide enough fuel to keep the engine from leaning out. Easy to tune and bolts right onto stock 300-340 manifolds. The 625cfm should work well on your 340, particularly if it's stock internally.

The AFB is a superb, simple design. Easy to tune, and bulletproof once you get them dialed in. I've loved Carters for almost 40 years. Frank

    AFB carbs.

Hey Jeff, What intake are you running under yours. Mine is a Poston. Got an Edelbrock 750 electric choke on 72 350 mildly built. Done some rejetting but still have some bog in it at take off. Does good at wot. Thinking about a one inch spacer to see if it would help. What your opinion?

I heard the Poston intakes run better with a 1" spacer under the carb. Wouldn't hurt to try:Do No:

I have a 69 GS with TA 212 cam and a 750 Edelbrock with that off idle bog as well, if I don't feather out of a stop it will stall out.

I am using an adapter that came off a Mopar Thermoquad to an edelbrock intake. I just turned it upside down to fit the eddy carb to rochester intake. Its 4 hole to 4 hole.

Maybe I need a higher stall converter or something but I just can't get that bog out.

Currently I am running a stock ported manifold with a 1" spacer for an adapter. It is the open type and has been ground a little to form a better transition into the intake where the spacer mounts.I haven't had any trouble with bogging unless I have had the mixture too rich. You might try to turn your mixture screws in a quarter to a half turn and see if that doesn't help your bog a little.Worked for me and I haven't had any problems since. This will also help your bottom end torque a little off the line.:TU: Jeff B.

    carb. spacer

Thanks for the info. I'll give the spacer a try. Maybe that will cure it till I get my Q-jet rebuilt.

    Hello,

Edelbrock just came out with a new carberator that has a seconday air valve like a quadrajet. It will be interesting to see if the rods can be changed out as easily as on their popular square bores. If so, it will have the best of both carberators in one. I like having the seconday air valve on the rochester on my 350, but to change the primary rods requires taking the carberator apart. The new carberator comes in either a 650 or 800 cfm. I would be inclined to go with the 800 on a 350 given that Buicks like big carberators. I'm not sure if the seconday air valve is conected to a set of secondary rods like on a rochester. I like this feature on a rochester because if tuned properly you know that you are getting enough fuel with 2 sets of jets. Also you know that your not being overcarberated because if tuned properly the seconday airvalves controll this , including the amount that the secondary rods are lifted from the jets. I will be very impressed if the new Edelbrock has these same qualities.

    Mike,
The AVS isn't really a new carb. Carter made them and they were originally available on 66 Chebbies and 68-71 Chrysler products. It is very similar to the Carter AFB (and Edelbrock), the main differences being the adjustable air valve and lack of booster venturis on the secondary side. They don't have secondary rods like a Q-jet.
Gregg, an excellent book on Carter carbs is Carter Carburetors, by Dave Emanuel, put out by S-A Design, ISBN # 0-931472-11-3. Hope that helps.

Larry, thanks for the tip...I also talked to my mechanic and he says they are very good carbs. I guess I'll rebuild it and go from there. Greg
