You wouldn't believe what came out of my rear end!

Hi All, went to check my rear end today and when I put my finger in the hole it came out dry!!! This really pisses me off because just recently I asked that a mechanic check my rear end.
They always make a big deal about this. What the heck is the problem? If your finger comes out wet your O.K. if it doesn't you've got a trouble.
Anyway I've found the best solution is to pump it out, so I inserted my hose and began to pump away. The pressure the pump was building up was enormous. I could barely stroke the plunger but eventually I was rewarded by a thick gooey black substance the consitency of tar!!! Is this normal? Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Perhaps the wrong lubrication was used. Ive heard that you should use a blended 80W90, but that might be for limited slip.
Should I go back and show the mechanic what came out of my rear end, or would that be anal retentive? :Do No:

Absolutely not normal. The mechanic obviously checked nothing. You need to remove the cover and thoroughly clean out the rear. I used a couple cans of brake cleaner to do a good job of spraying out my rear diff last year, and that was with just typical old lube in it, none of the thick junk you found. Is the rear end making weird noises when you drive? I would think it would. Maybe someone else here can tell you what exactly to look for, for signs of wear that you may need to be concerned with.

    Fluid level

I was told the level should be about 1/2 inch below the fill hole. Anything more is just more drag in the rear end.

    level

check the car on a level surface it should trickle slightly out when plug is removed. top off so it does. You will never feel the differnece in the drag trust me. Fluid keeps your gears alive . That is why the sight plug is there at that level in the housing. This is the level it should be keep at. 1/2 inch down probably will not hurt it but why chance it to some drag- are you a sub 9 second car trying to cut the ET down or trying to get that 455 gas milage in the 20 mile per gallon range...lol :) . I am just joking with you. The fluid will get hot and thin out a bit. Good luck on the rears. Jim

A friend of mine bought a 66 Buick sedan back in 1978 from a used car dealer and found the rear end packed full of heavy grease, we figured out backlash was excessive and the bearings were worn.
It took him $250 to completely overhaul it himself but until 2001 it was a good running car when a unlicensed Illegal Alien T-boned him destroying it
