After tiring of playing around with replacing my door jamb switches, I decided I needed some fresh air before locking up the 68 for the night, and went for an innocent cruise around town. No really, I don't street race, and rarely if ever see any street racing here. So I bopped around a few streets, then hit I-29 for a blast of fresh air, all windows open. Took the NDSU exit and drove by campus on my way back home. Not that there are ever any lovely coeds out walking around! :Brow: I'm on a 2 lane one-way street and hardly a car on the road. I stop at a red light, and a couple college-age kids pull up on my left, and stop a couple feet ahead of my position. I glance over, and they aren't paying any attention to my old car at all, no surprises there. But when the green flashes they floor it, but since I like to leave stop lights in a hurry, they don't get much more than 1/2 car length on me at the start. I easily overtake them long before the next intersection, where the light is red, and have about 2 car lengths on them when I brake for the red. They come up along side and we have another green well before we've stopped, and they want more! This time I'm ready and leave them far behind. Next intersection they decide to turn off, and we've caught up with some traffic, so our little fun is over. Thus ended my first street racing experience, believe it or not. Took me about 25 years of driving for it to happen, but what the heck, better late than never! Wish I would have figured out what they were driving, but it wasn't any kind of winged monstrosity. Something domestic, but it was fun anyway! Before anyone criticizes me, I glanced ahead and in the rear mirror to make sure there were no other cars in the area. Maybe I really do need to get out to a strip...
Sounds like a fun nite. When I was in high school we'd sometimes try to race the old muscle cars light to light on Route 57. We knew we'd not win, but just wanted to see them in action. Of course they'd keep just ahead of us, and never show us all they could do. Still, it was fun. Its not always about punks thinking they are fast - sometimes its just having a fun nite.
That's exactly the impression I got from these guys. Just out for a little fun, no stupid antics involved. I know I had fun!
I don't even do that... beyond 5-10mph over the speed limit anyway P I did get a call from a 15-16 year old walking down the road this evening to "light 'em up" in the middle of town, so I promptly abliged (sp?)... which can be just as bad as racing, but I was just having fun. It was only a block from the police station so it was a little nerve racking... but no tickets
Dave , I thought you might have been at the vintage car auction in West Fargo today. I stopped in and they really didn't have much other than a 62 vette that didn't sell and a red 69 Wildcat convertible with 103,000 miles and a new white top. Interior looked original white and not torn. Newer paint without any dings. I missed the bidding but my friend that was there looking for a older convertible said it sold for 10,700. I looked at him and said you didn't buy it? He said its to big and reminds me of my parents old Lasabre. I said and the problem is??????? I think he wants a Chevy. He was looking at a 58 but it was a hardtop.
Nah, too many projects on my list this weekend. I thought about it though, just couldn't squeeze it in. I saw the Wildcat listed in the newspaper ad, and I saw it at the WF Pavilion earlier this spring, at the Toppers show. Nice looking 'vert, wouldn't mind owning one of those boats myself.
OH-OH! Me thinks that the bug has bitten! Just wait 'til you drop in that 455 one of these days!!!:Brow:
Ha !!! you think it stops there ?? TH400 to handle the power....HD U-Joints ....a good drive shaft.....a safety loop (I think all cars should have this) ....Then with the new rear you'll at least need to box the arms and put new bushings all around Have Disc's up front ?? you'll want them once your right foot gets used to exercising a 455 - a few seconds of "Weeeee" and your close to triple digits and the stock drums get scarey after a while Get yourself one of those 5 gallon water jugs and throw your change into it every nite BTW - Nice KILL!!:beer :bglasses: :beer
David if i make it to see my brother down there this summer maybe we can find out if my 68 gs 400 is any faster than a 350. I know its faster than his cadillac even when my timing was retared about 20 degrees. Somebody had it like that when i bought it. ED
If I remember correctly, from driving my brother's 68 GS400 4spd in the late 70's, you "should" kick my butt. Let me know if/when you're coming out!
