Wrong master cylinder?

I installed a new manual master cylinder from a '74 Chev C10 P/U. It has smaller front reservior than the rear. I connected the rear brakes to the front(smaller res)since that's how it was plumbed on the original. The front discs are plumbed to the rear(larger res) via the line lock. Is this wrong? A friend that stopped by said it wouldn't work. I don't have any drivetrain in it yet, but it does stop the car. Should I replace it again with a m/c with equal size reserviors?
