Afternoon everyone. Was talking to my engine builder today & we're at the point of starting to talk about pistons.

90% of the motor will be T/A stuff but I saw these pistons, pins, & rings all included for a decent price. Made in Merica & since I'm not building a race motor, 425-450 hpish street once in a blue moon strip car this seems like a decent deal.

Iron heads, ported, Stage 1 valves, springs etc... & going with "H" beam rods.

You guys have any experience with these or Wiseco pistons?

    Thanks,

    Kyle

To my knowledge they sit pretty low in the bore mine sat at .052

I have these in my motor I race.......well I have the flat tops......didnt look to see if these were those put that number rings a bell in my tiny head.

they are 1.980 compression height so if you want closer to 0 deck you either need to cut the block or longer rod. on a never cut block expect these to sit about .040ish down. it's pretty standard to cut about. 02 to true and even the deck surfaces as a standard so. that still leaves .020ish to be 0.

mine are sitting .010 down. if I recall the weights were fairly close. I think we had 1 we had to doctor down.

so far so good. but I only have 20ish or so passes. my motor is in the 700hp area.

there are better piston to be had for sure, but for the price hard to beat

Mine very well have had several thousandths machined off the top of the set I had now that I think about it, to drop compression for a pump gas build, poor things were in 3 different combos

Not sure these are same as I bought in 05, sounds like it. Are they 4.350" bore? That's what I put in my race engine and still running. We had them at .002 down. The JEs I run now are 1.795 and run them .000

Wow! A lot of this is going above my head. I'm plenty familiar with motors/motor internals but I guess I've just never thought about this before.

From what I'm gathering is if the piston sits too low in the cylinder it will negatively affect quench.

Wiseco says these pistons are in fact 4.350".

No machine work has been done quite yet. Just got back from baking. If I recall there may be a decking charge(I'd have to look at my build sheet).

Read Jim Weise's comments in this thread,

Bottom line, anyone building a BBB engine in this day and age would be foolish to go with anything but a custom piston. Buying any of the commonly available off the shelf pistons will leave the piston .040-.050 below the deck at TDC. That is not what you want for detonation resistance and performance. I know budget is a consideration, but I would rather wait a bit longer and do it right the first time. I would talk with Jim Weise about piston choices. There are more choices now than ever before. You can order them with the right compression distance so that the piston is at 0 deck with a small clean up to the deck. That is what you want. You can customize the dish/valve reliefs to get the static compression ratio you'll need for the cam you plan to run. That will get you the Dynamic Compression Ratio you'll need to run pump gas.

I have used several sets of Wiseco's over the years. They do sit at .040 with an untouched block. I usually do a .025" cut on the deck which puts the piston at .015 in the hole. This deck height with a .027 cometic gasket or even a .038 Felpro gives good compression, and I've never had an issue with detonation, performance or intake alignment . Moral of the story is, with an unlimited budget and starting from a clean slate, I would certainly go with a Custom piston 470 combo.. But for less than $500 with the rings, those Wiseco's are a fantastic option. IMO

Exactly my thoughts as I've used them with good results. My only reason to go custom is to get the lightest possible as I'm trying to take stress off crank and block. May be an old man's folly.
