Hey guys I recently cleaned up and repainted my air cleaner in the GS. Of course one thing leads to another and I wanted to paint the fenders to match, which lead to the fire wall clean up, which lead to moving the MSD box and hiding as many wires and relays as possible. Can of worms, but it should look much better once it's done. I came across 3 wires which I need help identifying. Its probably a long shot but there are two red wires coming from the factory harness (see picture) They both went to the positive terminal I had in the engine bay. Any idea what they could be? I was thinking they provide power to the interior but I don't know for sure. Also there is a third green wire which I believe is the accessory? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Looks like the 2 main feed wires that should go to the starter solenoid big terminal along with the + battery cable. Both of those feed wires should have fusible links at the solenoid connection. One feed wire is 10 ga., the other is 12 ga. The fusible links are 14 ga. and 16 ga. respectively. The bigger feed wire powers everything in the car EXCEPT the headlights, the smaller feed wire is for the headlights only.

The guy before me did quite the hack job. I took another picture and tried to label everything. There is one wire than can't be seen that goes to the tranny, its wired up for the switch pitch.

Thank you! :beer I'll keep posting pictures. Hopefully the rest of the engine bay will look as awesome as the air cleaner.

    Maybe this will help,

The green wire is for the temperature sender. There should be a dark blue for the oil pressure sender.

Yes thank you! The text is hard to read, maybe I'm downloading it wrong?

Also I have aftermarket gauges so I won't need the green or dark blue wires.

If you send me an E-mail, I can send you a scan of part of the wiring diagram. The page is kind of ruffled, but you can zoom in and read the wire colors. My E-mail address is in my signature.

The tan wire with the white tracer is the brake warning light wire. Goes on the distribution block.

The #10 red wire next to it goes to the starter. The other red wire on the end goes to the alternator. The brown wire that doesn't go anywhere goes to the regulator. That wire that you think is an accessory looks like its spliced into a black wire? Does the black wire have a white stripe on it? If so, that should be for the turbo 400 kickdown solenoid

4 years later and... we’re back. Lots of bs happened since then but now I’m back on this and trying to get this sorted once and for all. I apologize but I can’t seem to find the email with the wiring diagram. Not an original car so it will need minimal wiring. I’m also trying to clean it up and hide as many wires as possible.

I’m now re-wiring the car. (See sketch)
    • Battery is relocated to the trunk
    • + junction post located on the inside of the passenger side firewall
    • hole located in passenger foot well. 1g + cable from the junction post to the starter as well as the ignition (Purple) 12g cable will run through here.
    • 6g alternator wire through hole in the center of the firewall down to the junction post.

    Questions:
    • 12g red wire: was this supposed to be the alternator cable? If so I assume I can remove it as I have replaced it?

•10g red wire: provided power to the starter? If so I have replaced it and can remove?

    • Which wire provides power to the fuse block/rest of the car?

    • white braided line out of the harness: accessory wire?? I believe I had it going to the choke. If so I will replace and run it though the center firewall hole.

That looks like a mess to me. I have no idea what you are trying to do. The starter is powered by the positive battery cable. The starter solenoid is activated by a purple wire in our Skylarks/GS. The alternator feed tees into one of the main feed wires that are also attached along with the + battery cable to the big lug on the starter solenoid.

I’m trying to clean up the engine bay so I don’t want wires running across my firewall. The battery is located in the trunk so Im going to run a cable down the right side of the car to a junction bolt. From the junction bolt it goes out the bottom of the right side firewall to the starter. The purple solenoid wire I removed from the harness and ran it inside the cabin across to the hole where the battery cable is going. ... this is too difficult to explain with text. I’ll just take a video it’s easier to explain. Stand by. CD16A805-349A-4278-AABE-870C21CEEB7C.jpeg

Yes, assuming the 12 ga, and 10 ga are your main power leads, they can both go to the junction block along with the alternator charge lead. Normally, all those wires would go to the starter solenoid big lug along with the + battery cable. You are just doing that inside the car?

Okay thank you. Correct all the wires inside the car to clean up the engine bay. I could run them all the way down to the starter but with this set up that doesn’t seem necessary. Appreciate your help.
