Wipers on my 60 Invicta

    Hi folks
My wipers are playing up. The internal transmission is working great and the arms turn fine - to begin with. But after half a dozen wipes one of the blades sort of swivels out of position, and then the whole arm comes of the circular track and flops down loose (i.e falls off the external part at the root of the wiper, where it links to the driver mechanism). I'm guessing this is all to do with having non-original blades, but it could be a deeper problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

OK Johhnie: The stock wiper arm swivels. It has a track for an allignment piece that fits over the shaft where the arm is mounted. To install the wiper arm all you have to do is stretch the wiper arm (after it's on the shaft), and it will fit right on. Mitch

Thanks Mitch. I've discovered the swivel and stretch mechanism and I'm becoming quite expert at quickly fixing the wiper back in place. The problem is that I get only four or five wipes out of it before the arm again falls off the track. I must have to address something more fundamental to make a permanent fix, but I can't figure out exactly what it is....

OK Johnny: Look for either a weak spring in the arm, the left arm is on the right or maybe the guide tracks are on backwards. I carry a guide track on my key ring. Mitch.

BTW, I have an all dark blue 60 Invicta sedan too!

OK Johnny: One thing else I forgot. Make sure the guide track is on tight too. Here is the order the parts go from last to first..........

    Wiper Arm
    Threaded holding washer
    Guide track
    Large threaded holding washer
    Spacer
    Chrome housing

One other thing. If you don't have the shop manual try the 59-Buick.com 1959 are the same as 1960 and there might be someone there who has ha similar trouble. Mitch

Many thanks, fellow '60 Invicta owner! I'll check all of those things you mentioned over the weekend. I was at a rockabilly festival last weekend and had to drive back home about 50 miles in a storm with no wipers (on narrow British roads) - and I really don't want to do that again!

OK Johnny: Just to have as many items covered as I can think of.....put some wax on your windshield, wipe it off well and go over the entire glass with some #0000 ott steel wool (extra fine). If you are ever caught in the rain the water will bead right off at higher speeds than in town traffic. With fresh blades and the arms working properly your vision will still be excellent Been there, done that. Good luck.

Also, don't forget that those old two speed wiper motors have a tendency to turn on and not turn off. It is usually the motor rather than the switch. Just another thing to watch out for on a 1960 Buick. Mitch

Thanks again, Mitch. I'll try those suggestions for sure. By the way, I took a look at the 59-Buick.com forum, which looks excellent. I registered, but seem to be getting no response to my efforts to 'activate user name' etc. I'll keep trying, and I'm sure I'll be swapping messages with you on the 59 forum before long.
