Wiper switches, new or used?

I had problems with the wiper switch in my 72 GS yesterday. It started rain as the car show was ending. I tried to turn on the wipers and all they wanted to do was move about 2" (up,down,up,down). So the next thing I tried was pushing the button, still nothing. So I took off and as I was going down the road, I keep playing with the switch with no success. I tried the button again and the wiper came on. I never drive it in the rain unless I get caught by surprise. Is it better to find a used one or are the reproductions just as good? Who sells the best replacement? Can the switch be changed from under the dash without taking the cluster out?

I can be changed with the cluster on but is a PITA. I have seen the repop and it seems nice. I see used ones all the time on Ebay.
I would check the switch before replacing. The wiper/washer can do weird things when it goes bad or has a bad ground. I made instructions how to test the switch. It requires a continuity tester.

John; excellent description of the debugging process for the switch.

Anyone else purchased a reproduction wiper switch. Where did you get it and how do you like it?

weren't those wiper switches used across the whole or most of the GM vehicles?

I think impalas used the same one as the Skylark GS (70-72). I can check.
