In the process of painting the engine bay and motor I removed the wiper motor and when I went to put it back on the connectors were very brittle and I think I messed them up. When I test it it ran but started to smoke so I turned it off. When I took it off to inspect it I noticed that on the back side of the three prong male connector there's what looks like a resistor or very small coil the was burned up. I think the motor is OK but I can't find a replacement connector that looks the same. Is there a way to make my own or do I need a new complete wiper motor? Thanks, Brad
Well, I don't know about the smoking, I've never seen that. I know you can buy that resistor board NOS if you can find one. I've seen the resistor wire soldered before and it worked. You could get the resistor off another dead motor. The real question would be why it happened, like was the wiper turned on and the blades were frozen in ice? Is there not enough grease in the motor gears or something? Was it wired wrong?
Jason, everybody has one of those...that's not it. That's the parking switch/solenoid. It's this thing I think he means... http://repairs.willcoxcorvette.com/1963-1982-corvette-wiper-motor-resistor/
ah, ok....Yes, Wilcox Corvettes has them for sale on Ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Corvette-C...ash=item2127aa4b9e:g:cgsAAOSww9xZLa6i&vxp=mtr
WOW, you guys amazing! Thanks! Great question mrolds69. when I had the motor off I openend up the gear box and regreased which I think I should have left well enough alone but then that would have been the smart think to do. I'm thinking when I put it back together there must have been some binding but then it seemed to run well. the two connectors, the double and single only go one way... I think. I may order the resistor on eBay take it all apart and give it another go making sure there's nothing binding before I buy a complete wiper motor. Thanks guys, Brad
Just to ad something else... CHECK those darn grounds! After the motor is re-installed check motor frame to firewall ground and also the switch itself has a ground lug for "blade parking" and will also affect speed control. Look at the schematic here for the switch ground. It gets left hanging a lot after some dash work and it critical to smooth operation! ws
Thanks yachtsmanbill, after look at the wiper motor again last night I've decided to get a new rebuilt one, the wire diagram will help me make the grounds and wiring is correct. From what I researched I'll be able to pull the cover that has the washer pump on it and install it on the new pump.
Got a couple of gift cards to Amazon so I used them for a new rebuilt wiper motor and wiper pump. I plan on installing them this weekend. We'll see how it goes.....
one problem with rebuilt wiper motors it that the wiper parking mechanism may not have been refurbished/replaced. I bought & returned, many years ago, two "rebuilt" wiper motors where the parking unit was not fixed. I purchased a new motor + washer and all was well.
Thanks for the heads up gstewart. if the motor doesn't work out I'll have to bite the bullit and buy a new one. The one I bought is a Cordone, I've seen that name around, well see how good a motor it is...
The unit I purchased came off ebay. check this link for ideas. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr..._nkw=chevelle+windshield+wiper+motor&_sacat=0
Thanks, I see lots of options in case the one I got goes south. I received the washer pump part, it's from Pep Boy's from Amazon, oddly enough it's made it the USA!. The motor should be here Jan. 2nd. I also bought the new grommets to attache the motor to the firewall so I won't be able to install this weekend...
I recived the wiper motor today, the wiper pump came earlier. I'm going to try and install iy this weekend. W'll see how it goes...
Good news, I installed the motor and pump today and all went well everything worked! I did have to go to Napa to pick up a couple of new wiper blade refills. The only problem I had was when the wiper went onto the park posistion the edge of the blade hit the lower windshield trim and bent it a little but with the new wiper blade refill it stop hitting and parked ok.
There is an adjustment on the wiper linkage where it connects to the arm of the motor. The holes for the nuts are slotted so you can adjust where the blades land when it parks
Thanks Jason, I saw those but was a little unsure of what to do, maybe I'll loosen those up and do some adjusting .
