Motor doesn't shut off when switch is off. Checked ground wire in switch although I was 99% sure it was ok (the pump works when the switch is depressed: ground for that switch comes through the wiper switch). Also checked the ground strap (firewall) Searched the board, but nothing else came up than an advize to replace it or (have it) rebuild. The motor I took off the Cat has Delco # 4918077: Is that the correct # for a 68 Wildcat? o No: o No: When I search www for that numberI only find 68 Corvette or 70 and up A and F bodies....
72 book says 68-72 B-C-E 4918342, but the number could have been changed. I don't see your number anywhere. The shop manual tells how to troubleshoot the wiper motor/washer.
Thanks, Frank. That number makes more sense searching the internet. Still the one on the Cat worked perfectly: 2 speeds, hidden wipers and pump (till the shut off problem occured). Unfortunately the 2 NOS motors I have here don't seem to fit (4960754). Will go over the manual again tomorrow....
Hi Rob, right...I was wondering if it had hidden wipers, I'm not familiar w/ that model but know 68 was when they started changing to hidden wipers. It could be the switch on the dash. This is when it's good to have spare parts for testing. There is a small switch that turns the wipers off and puts them in the "park" position. It's on or in the motor assembly somewhere, it's a cheap switch if you can find one. I think it's called a "park" switch. Maybe you can clean the points on it. Check the manual. Maybe someone else knows........
Frank, although I found out the dash wiper/wash switch was ok I replaced that one with a NOS one while I was at it (all the dash was out of the car). Planned to start sanding the car this week, but this gremlim took lots of my spare time to work on the repaint. Want to have it solved before the paint gets on the car. Thanks!
Thanks Randy... still a bit confused: the fact that another motor worked perfectly could that mean that the transmission (and linkage) is altered as well... or maybe just a re-wiring? Or are those motors just slightly off and could another part# be used as well?? in other words: should I look for the same motor that came off or the search for an original one (with the danger I have to alter a lot more) o No:
Hi Rob, I think there were many numbers for the same motor. Sometimes the washer units were different, so they would have a different # motor. I would try to fix the one you have. Someone here before was talking about a ground prob w/ the wire near the switch. It can ground into the dash and cause that prob. Other stuff I read was about that "park" switch. It's in the washer unit, I think, it's greased and the grease hardens + then it sticks on. Peeps say to clean the hard grease off + regrease w/ lithium. I'm just not sure you need a new motor if it works. Maybe yank the washer unit...dig in that shop manual, I'm sure it will help!
Found the problem: solenoid and 'hook' were too dirty/sticky to engage. Solenoid is lower left on photo: motor runs and stops like a charm again: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/FUDy4GcWyXs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Thanks for all the information :beer
